Nonetheless, Kwabs never had any notion of seriously pursuing music as a career until his unadorned YouTube cover of Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star" became a massive viral hit, racking up 100,000 views. He was approached with a management contract, and decided to take music farther. He released a few original songs on YouTube, leading to his being hotly tipped by MTV and BBC radio and securing a deal with Atlantic. On his 2014 debut EP, Wrong or Right, he collaborated with London-born, Vienna-based producer Sohn. The melancholy songs on the EP set his smooth, powerful baritone voice to a minimalist, synthesized backing somewhat reminiscent of the Human League. The style was dubbed "Synth&B," and the collaboration drew comparisons to that between Seal and Adamski back in the '90s. A second EP, Pray for Love, and a more upbeat single, "Walk," followed. Kwabs also worked with Plan B and Dave Okumu on his debut album, which was expected to be released in 2015. ~ John D. Buchanan, Rovi
Cheating On Me
Kwabs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It swept me wet to another place
Lord knows you ain't seen enough of me
Why did I fall asleep on a love so deep?
I fell apart when I couldn't see
I was cheating on me
Broke my own heart when I couldn't see
Our love is like a fading melody
A song I should've sang, a note I should've reached
A loneliness that I find hard to describe
Stand up so many nights I couldn't been by your side
I fell apart when I couldn't see
I was cheating on me
Broke my own heart when I couldn't see
I was cheating on me
Why don't you cry?
Why don't you cry?
You live this life
'Cause You live this life
You live this life
I fell apart when I couldn't see
I was cheating on me
Broke my own heart when I couldn't see
I was cheating on me
Cheating on me, yeah
I fell apart when I couldn't see
I was cheating on me
Broke my own heart when I couldn't see
I was cheating on me
I was cheating on me
Cheating on, cheating on, cheating on, cheating on me
The song "Cheating On Me" by Kwabs showcases a tale of self-realization and growth. Through the vivid imagery that is presented, Kwabs takes us on a journey through his experiences of discovering that he has been neglecting himself and his well-being, placing his focus and attention on an external relationship, where he should have been working on his internal issues. He frames this realization in the lyrics "I was cheating on me" which encapsulates the idea that he was disloyal to his own needs and desires.
The opening lyrics symbolize Kwabs being swept up in the fast pace of life, a metaphorical tide that carried him away to a place where he was not connected with himself. The lyrics "Why did I fall asleep on a love so deep?" highlights his regret at losing sight of the importance of self-love and the cost of neglecting this. The chorus reinforces this theme, as he repeats "I was cheating on me" several times, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
The second verse reveals a love that is fading, a melody that is incomplete, and an emotional loneliness that he can't fully describe. The lines "Stand up so many nights I couldn't been by your side" suggest missed opportunities and moments that could have been spent improving his own mental and emotional state. The bridge focuses on the need to accept the life we are living and to embrace the journey of self-discovery, as evident in the lines "Why don't you cry? You live this life."
Overall, the message of the song "Cheating On Me" by Kwabs is to remind us of the importance of taking care of ourselves and having a healthy self-love relationship. The lyrics illustrate how easy it is to neglect ourselves through the distractions and turbulence of life, but ultimately, we need to prioritize taking care of ourselves to live a fulfilling life.

This song is about neglecting yourself.
Rolling with the tide = going through the motions, taking the path of least resistance
It swept him away, to a place other than himself, his mind.
Lord knows, you (him taking to himself, his life, his problems) haven't seen enough of me (he's been putting his life off)
Why did I fall asleep... So deep? (How could I abandon myself, someone so important to me)
As for the chorus, he realizes he was choosing other things rather than himself. Perhaps he was choosing things that were toxic to him, t things he would regret.
"Or live is like a fading melody" he is referring to his dreams and aspirations. "A not I should've reached"
"A loneliness he finds hard to describe" it's a loneliness he can't understand because it had been neglected. He chose sadness and confusion over happiness and understanding."I stayed up so many nights I could've been by your side"
The next part is my favorite because is the most symbolic.
The part of him that's been neglected represents the choir in the back singing
"Bit don't you cry, you live this life."
And he finally listens to the words and repeats them back. That's spirituality. It's what he had been missing and oblivious to.
Before, in the chorus, he realizes what he's been neglecting, but in this part with the choir, the listener gets to see him finally, and genuinely reach back and inward towards himself, and his true feelings.
This song is more than beautiful, it's a medication. This is a song that pulls you out of the hardest moments of your life. it's the kind of song you put on repeat, just to make it through the night.
This song can do nothing but good.
