First Time
Kygo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were lovers for the first time
Running all the red lights
The middle finger was our peace sign, yeah
We were sipping on emotions
Smoking and inhaling every moment
It was reckless and we owned it, yeah, yeah

We were high and we were sober
We were under, we were over
We were young and now I'm older
But I'd do it all again

Getting drunk on a train track
Way back, when we tried our first cigarettes (oh)
Ten dollars was a fat stack
I'd do it all again (oh)
Bomber jacket and a snapback
Your dad's black Honda was a Maybach (oh)
"Re: Stacks" on the playback
I'd do it all again (oh)

We were lovers on a wild ride
Speeding for the finish line
Come until the end of our time, yeah
Started off as a wildfire
Burning down the bridges to our empire
Our love was something they could admire, yeah, yeah

We were high and we were sober
We were under, we were over
We were young and now I'm older
But I'd do it all again

Getting drunk on a train track
Way back, when we tried our first cigarettes (oh)
Ten dollars was a fat stack
I'd do it all again (oh)
Bomber jacket and a snapback
Your dad's black Honda was a Maybach (oh)
"Re: Stacks" on the playback
I'd do it all again (oh)

Stack stack, stack stack, oh oh
Speed speed, speed speed oh oh
Stack stack, stack stack, oh oh
Speed speed, speed speed oh oh
Stack stack, stack stack, oh oh
Speed speed, speed speed oh oh
Stack stack, stack stack, oh oh

Speed speed, speed speed oh oh
Stack stack, stack stack, oh oh

Overall Meaning

Kygo's song "First Time" is an ode to nostalgia and the sentimentality that comes with reflecting on the past. The lyrics describe a wild and reckless relationship that the singer had with their lover when they were younger. Despite the risks they took, they owned everything they did and wouldn't take back a single moment. The lyrics offer a clear picture of two people who were once in love and who are now looking back on their time together with fondness.

The first verse describes the reckless nature of their relationship with each other, "Running all the red lights, the middle finger was our peace sign, yeah // We were sipping on emotions, smoking and inhaling every moment // It was reckless and we owned it, yeah, yeah." The second verse describes the innocence of their youth, with the lyrics "Getting drunk on a train track // Way back, when we tried our first cigarettes (oh) // Ten dollars was a fat stack." The choruses repeat the idea that the love they shared was something they would do all over again, even though time has now changed them: "We were lovers on a wild ride // Speeding for the finish line // Come until the end of our time, yeah // Started off as a wildfire // Burning down the bridges to our empire // Our love was something they could admire, yeah, yeah // We were high and we were sober // We were under, we were over // We were young and now I'm older // But I'd do it all again."

Overall, "First Time" is a song that speaks to the universal experience of looking back on the past with a combination of nostalgia and acceptance. It provides a glimpse into the singer's personal experiences with love and how that love has shaped them into the person they are today.

My theory is:
Just like the 'It Ain't Me' video, this video changes our perception of the song. When we hear "We were lovers for the first time", we instantly think a couple, but they're actually referring to siblings who were best friends.
Notice how the lyrics says "WE were young, but now I'M older"? She was the older sister who took care good care of him, but after she died, he remained stuck in the past (hence why it's not 'we're older').
Her spirit watches him from a distance. He doesn't know how to do things on his own. He relied on her so much. If you look closely, as she starts to die, his hands start to go on fire showing that her guiding hands are no longer there with him, and he's left to learn on his own.

As we see him try to live, the fire keeps consuming him. He misses her dearly but feels he can't do things on his own. This is why we see him struggling, and why we see him trying to make memorable items with the ashes.

Every time he 'dies' (not actually, but symbolic of a mental breakdown and wanting to just give up completely)... he gets back up again and 'does it all again' and he gets stronger each time. This is why you can see ash outlines of him all over the place on the floor from the many times he's given up, but got up and tried again.

We then see him older and he's finally able to play the piano. We can see the flames on his hands have stopped... he's at peace and he's stronger. Instead of consuming himself in the memories, he's living his life with the people currently in his life (his Mom in the car, his friends in the field, his crush on the bridge, etc.) all while keeping his memories of his sister. Making her proud. He's finally at peace with himself, and this is why we see him in the field of flowers like her.

The moral of the story is no matter how stormy and rough life gets, get up and keep trying... Don't lose hope. :)
