What people need to understand about the tomb is that it was established to honor soldiers who were blown up so badly that they were unrecognizable, or whose bodies were lost at sea or buried in an area that is impossible to recover. It’s a sacred place for families to go when they don’t have a grave. These people gave up everything, even their identities, for us.

The guards are absolute professionals and deadly serious.

We went to Menin Gate in Belgium, the atmosphere was really sombre and respectful, that is a Cenotaph for Soldiers who have no known Grave from the World over who died in WW1. Very Poignant.
Men were just obliterated, thousands upon thousands of them.

I bet that these people also know this, but they try to sneak in anyway, which I find it to be so disrespectful. People shock me all the time. I visited Washington and saw the Tomb of the unknown soldier. I was 13 years old at the time. My father served in the USAF and was in Vietnam. Of course he told me how to act but by then I didnt need any instruction. I respected the guards, grounds, and memorials all throughout D.C. it seems to be basic respect and human decency that's been lost over the past 30 years or so. So sad. Even had my father not served, I would've known how to act.

What most folks don't know is that those weapons are loaded and the soldiers DO have the authorization to shoot you if you don't comply with their commands. The fact that they don't shoot tells more about their discipline than anything. They can, though, and won't be in any trouble for it. It's not just a show or for your entertainment.

I have an army buddy who was a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They have very specific requirements for height and body shape. Their PT is really interesting too. He told me stories of how they would say a fallen soldier's name, and they'd have to run the cemetery until they found the gravesite. He had a great command presence too.

There is a similar memorial in Mumbai, India known as the अमर जवान ज्योति translation: Eternal Flame of the Unknown soldier
You know how these memorials have an unmarked helmet mounted on a vertical rifle planted into the ground as a sign of all unknown soldiers who died defending their country?
Well, there is a 2012 photo of a Muslim Kid directly kicking down that rifle and helmet. The Muslim minority in India were protesting against atrocities on Muslims across the world. Imagine having that level of contempt for soldiers of your own nation.

I've been to the tomb of the unknown soldier. It's the most somber place you'll ever be. Any disrespect in the slightest, is not tolerated by the guards, or anyone else. The people who do disrespect this sacred place, have alot to learn in the world.

The reason it’s so strict is to stop those who are inconsiderate from littering, muddying or vandalising the area. The whole point of visiting the tomb is to be reminded of their sacrifices and to respect those who died with the unfortunate circumstances that either their deaths weren’t recorded or they simply couldn’t be identified. Strolling into the area is like strolling into someone’s funeral, except this funeral is constantly going for each and every lost soul. Regardless of how the early settlers and founders treated natives, you’re still expected to treat the area with respect as those servicemen/women are there because they want to be, because they’re standing on ground that connects them to their brothers of the past. If I, a Brit who considers the US to be history’s Anti-Hero, can understand the meaning behind the rules then surely you can.

This is for someone I heard this story somewhere and I was thinking about it today.  I just wanted to share it. Here it goes. There was a guy in an SUV driving that was frustrated he didn't get the car he wanted from the car lot. A homeless man walked by and looked at him. He said to himself, "what I would do to have a car." As the homeless guy was checking into a homeless shelter , there was man. He only had shorts on with no shoes and no shirt. He said to himself, "what I would do to have that man's outfit, and his shoes and his bicycle." After that the AMR was coming to the homeless shelter, there was a man on a stretcher. He was going out staring at all the people that were waiting in line for their beds, and the man who knew he would die that night. He thought to himself, "what I would do to have all their health."Just know wherever you are that Jesus loves you and someone would love to be in your place.

As a former Marine, I am baffled at how people think these sentries are merely ceremonial, or decorative or something. They guard national assets, these buildings and castles are national assets, far more valuable on the global scale than any one individual. If a person pushed their luck with any of these sentries and were pierced by a bayonet, I would 100% defend the sentry...and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? Wow...the grief of the families of those who voluntarily died for the nation in their youth clamor for a disrespecting trespasser to be shot. Plain and simple. If you want to disrespect their grave, then maybe you should go meet the dead in person and get permission first.

This act limits the powers of the federal government in the use of federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States. If you are so willing to look up the video on the guards at the tomb you will see they do not carry ammo for that reason and talk about all the legalities of it. also yes they are active personal but they are not security forces they are Honor Guards and all arrest powers ect fall to local police FBI and US Marshal services

It's not. It's usually the first posting after training for new Guardsmen. Also considering the last guards deployments to Afghanistan were 2018 for TORAL (Welsh Guards) and 2014 for HERRICK (Coldstream Guards), they would be running pretty short of Guardsmen if it was only manned by Afghan veterans. That said, people should be more respectful.

Everyone knows the war in Iraq was all about oil, even a fair share of the soldiers themselves. But they still picked up the rifle and went to war because they believed it would make a difference in protecting everyone they ever loved or hated in their lives back home. They even stood up for the people who don't appreciate what they do, because they believed it was the right thing to do. For better or for worse, a person’s intention matters in life - regardless of the outcome of those circumstances.

Soldiers fulfill orders. The same way people working at Wal-Mart take orders from higher-ups in the company, soldiers fall in line in their company and listen to their superiors. If a customer takes issue with Wal-Mart corporate policy, they don’t complain to the kid stocking shelves because it wasn’t his decision that negatively affected them. Granted, sometimes the individuals who are supposed to be following orders misbehave (war crimes) in which case they are reprimanded and face court. But 99.9% of the time when war crimes have taken place, it's the result of poor decision making or ignorance by those at HQ.

Pretty well everything that soldiers do in the field is recorded either on GoPro or through paperwork because (believe it or not) there are rules to follow and laws in place on the battlefield. More often than not, military contractors & mercenaries are the ones who do the dirty work and commit war crimes in places / circumstances the military cannot be seen getting involved in. But that has nothing to do with the brave men and women who fight for us.

Making offhand remarks about the soldiers who are on your side is about the most ignorant thing you can do IMO but I’m sure you can think of worse things yourself; I don't want any part of your petty life.

As someone who has a military parent(father in the USAF) and is planning on going to West Point for college, I have so much respect for anyone who has been in the military anywhere or if they are in law enforcement. I love the tactics, discipline, and mental attitude towards everything, so I learned all about what they go through.
