Wild Roses
Kylie Minogue; Nick Cave Lyrics

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
As she stared in my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
They grew down the river, all bloody and wild
When he knocked on my door and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace
He would be my first man, and with a careful hand
He wiped the tears that ran down my face

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the second day I brought her a flower
She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen
I said, 'Do you know where the wild roses grow
So sweet and scarlet and free?'

On the second day he came with a single rose
Said: 'Will you give me your loss and your sorrow?'
I nodded my head, as I laid on the bed
He said, 'If I show you the roses will you follow?'

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he stood smiling above me with a rock in his fist

On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief
As I kissed her goodbye, I said, 'All beauty must die'
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

Don't worry, Kylie, PJ will bring you justice, in "Henry Lee" 😇
Girl Power! ♥️

Joke aside, I want to show a huge respect to Kylie Minogue, for this song, because it seems like she is doing a great job (especially vocally); and while Cave is perhaps more used to dark, gloomy songs... she does a hell of a job in an area that at first glance, might not seem her cup of tea.

I would have the same opinion if she was the murderer, instead of Nick.
Actually, I find the idea very interesting.

Congratulations for such wonderful (musical and theatrical) manifestations of artistry!

I used to hear this song sometimes when I was a little girl, I had no idea that it was a murder song, because English is not my native language and didn't know the translation. However, I always had chills whenever I heard it. I'm almost 20 now, but the feeling I used to have still remains with me. Amazing song with disturbing lyrics - always gives me chills.

For the first time I heard this song about 25 years ago. It was a pretty beautiful song. And I still feel the same feelings. Also English isn't my native language but now I can understand about 90% of the words and I can realise this a little beet sad story from two first persons, maniak in love and Wild Rose.

Old Fatso

I dont think its murder song, i think its more like obsession to beauty and other things. But still cant be sure, its only my point of view.

“And I kissed her goodbye, said all beauty must die”. So beautiful, disturbing and emotional line. Nick Cave have to be the greatest lyricist of the past 30 years.

I made the comment to my sister that Nick Cave is almost an anti Tom Petty, just listen to Nick and then Tom and you'll see what I mean.

Beauty? Who? Killer or victim?

MozartsSister

Jeffrey Lee Piece was better imo, & a great inspiration for Cave - & gave him the idea for a murder ballad LP!
