Et c’était celui-là
Un port du Nord ça plaît
Surtout quand on n’y est pas
Ça fait qu’on voudrait y être
Ça fait qu’on n’sait pas bien
S’il faut s’taper l’poète
Ou s’taper la putain... d’Rotterdam
Où y’a pas qu’des marins
Où y’a des chiens perdus
Et les enfants des rues
Où y’a pas qu’des marchands
Où y’a pas qu’des chalands
Où y’a des vieux chevaux
Qui bridgent avec la mort
Où y’a des flics chinois
Qui se prennent pour la reine
Où y’a des filles en soie
Qui font couler leur gaine
Sur le bord du trottoir
Comme un chagrin de plus
Qui traînera ce soir
Tout le long de la rue
Si au moins ça pouvait ressembler à Rotterdam
Où y’a des rats crevés
Comme y’en a à Paris
Où y’a des chats croisés
Avec des vieilles souris
Où y’a pas que de l’import
Où y’a bien loin du port
Des amants qui se font
Et puis qui se défont
Où y’a pas qu’des banknotes
Au seuil des minijupes
Et des mecs qui s’occupent
A placer leur camelote
Où y’a des malheureux
Qui donneraient leur cul
Si en donnant son cul
On était bienheureux
Si au moins ça pouvait ressembler à Rotterdam
Où y’a des assassins
Planqués dans leur whisky
Et puis des insensés
Qui passeront pas la nuit
Où y’a pas qu’du tabac
Au goût de caramel
Où y’a de pauv’s soldats
Qui s’farciraient l’Carmel
Où y’a un Christ debout
Derrière un bar de nuit
Qui cause avec le bout
Avec le bout d’la nuit
Où y’a des exilés
Qui sortent leur exil
Dans le ciel barbelé
D’une publicité con
Si au moins ça pouvait ressembler à Rotterdam
Où je n’irai jamais
Car je vais au soleil
Où tu n’iras jamais
Car partout c’est pareil
Je prends le train du Sud
Tu prends le train du Sud
Il prend le train du Sud
Jusqu’au bout de la nuit
Si au moins ça pouvait ressembler à l’Italie
The song "Rotterdam" by Léo Ferré is a melancholic ode to the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The lyrics describe the city with a mix of realism and romanticism, highlighting both its positive and negative aspects. The singer of the song, who is not in Rotterdam, is drawn to the city and all that it represents for him. He acknowledges the presence of prostitutes, policemen, old horses, and abandoned dogs in the city streets, but he also sees beauty and poetic inspiration in the same urban landscape. He wishes he could be in Rotterdam, even though he knows that he will never go there because he is heading South to the sun.
The song offers a poignant reflection on the allure of the unknown and the power of imagination. Rotterdam becomes a symbol of the unattainable, yet desirable, place that exists only in the mind of the singer. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing for something beyond one's reach, something that is both familiar and foreign, just like a city that one has never visited but feels that one knows intimately.
