Erreur 404
L'Impératrice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dernier rendez-vous de nuit
Échec et mat sous la pluie
Tu prends l'avantage et tu dis
Que ce n'est pas sage mais j'en ai envie

404, écran noir
Laisse-moi rire, tu croyais m'avoir
Bon voyage imbécile
Mes hommages du bout du fil

Au hasard et sans ivresse
Comme happée en sens inverse
Pieds nus sur la voie lactée
De cette nuit désenchantée
Mon silence éclaire le voyage
Et tes illusions tracent le paysage

404, écran noir
Laisse-moi rire, tu croyais m'avoir
Bon voyage imbécile
Mes hommages du bout du fil

Bon voyage imbécile
Mes hommages du bout du fil

404, écran noir
Laisse-moi rire, tu croyais m'avoir
Bon voyage imbécile
Mes hommages du bout du fil

404, écran noir
Laisse-moi rire, tu croyais m'avoir

Bon voyage imbécile
Mes hommages du bout du fil

Overall Meaning

The French lyrics of L'Imperatrice's song Erreur 404 narrate the story of the last rendez-vous between two people that takes place at night. It seems to be a game where one of them takes the lead and gains an advantage. The other person acknowledges that it might not be a wise decision, but they still desire it. However, the ending of this game is uncertain as there is a sudden twist in the lyrics after the chorus. A reference is made to the error 404, which typically indicates that the webpage is not found, and the screen goes black. This metaphor possibly alludes to the fact that the relationship has ended, and the person singing the song is not affected by it. In fact, they seem to be content with having outsmarted the other person.

The second part of the song furthers the idea that the singer is not affected by the outcome of the rendez-vous. They seem to have detached themselves from any feeling of remorse or sadness. The lyrics describe them as moving in the opposite direction randomly, almost like a daydream. They visualize themselves walking barefoot on the Milky Way and enjoying their solitude. They are nonchalant about the entire scenario, and their silence is in stark contrast to the other person's illusions. In the chorus, the song repeats the reference to the error 404, indicating that the singer has moved on and the other person is still stuck in the past.

I was so fortunate to discover these guys while fast-scrolling through live footage from ACL this year (2022). I am infatuated. When I try to put on some other groups from my 22' year --- I can't make it through a single track --- they are all I want to listen to right now.

Anyway -- I'm taking my time digesting all the captivating videos, and I just watched the video for '404' today. I had a sincere emotional response to the imagery of the couples kissing during the chorus.
I should add that I find it quite difficult to feel much of anything when taking in content online -- years of lurking in the morasses of the internet has left me desensitized. But when I saw this video there was a moment that the entirety of my body observed stillness in unison.
My heart did not squeeze -- the place where I invite in oxygen made it all leave -- the little muscles which save my face from honest display forgot how to lie -- I was left disarmed from my words which I rely upon so. I was for the briefest moment shocked by sudden unexpected beauty.. which is a most elusive experience for me of late, to be shocked.

For the reaction elicited from my starving subconscious romantic by this sublime work -- my gratitude cannot be overstated.

The Empress, indeed !!!

L'Imperatrice has definitely become one of my favourite musicians, and I'm spreading the word about you to those around me, cause you deserve even more recognition and you're the biggest hidden gem in the music scene that there is <3

@enantiodromia

Isabel .Hoyos Don't spread the word, please. Do you know one example of a musician that made better music after becoming world-famous? It is good as it is.

@limperatrice_

Shhhh don't tell anyone

@enantiodromia

L'Impératrice That is good advice.

@issahr

I see your point, my intent is not to "try to make them famous" but to share their music with like-minded people around me that will appreciate their music, who perhaps wouldn't have come across them otherwise.

@johnsonn
