James Brown Is Dead
L.A. Style Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mass hysteria, this is techno
House is not my home but it rocks though
I checked up on the late great J.B.
His death is said on national TV
How when, and why this are the main
Things that I heard when I stroll down the lake
Now memory, man are you with that
James Brown is dead

Total chaos, man it's resurrected
I'm confused that things are gettin' hectic
In my brain, what is happenin'
Could this be a big misunderstanding
It is
The hardest working man in show biz is alive so (???)
Don't be mislead, cause the newsman said
James Brown is dead

James Brown is dead

James Brown is dead

Nightmare is over
Now I'm alone
Grab the mike rip shit an go for broke
Music masterpiece release with this
Now I will get much respect from EmCees
Along the way oh I heard him say
This is fly, this cool type of guy
He's total, and I'm so bad
James Brown is dead

James Brown is dead

James Brown is dead

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of L.A. Style's song "James Brown is Dead" depict the confusion and chaos surrounding the news of the death of James Brown, the "hardest working man in show biz." The song is a techno/house track, and the first verse describes how the singer heard about Brown's death on national TV and how it caused "mass hysteria." The singer admits that house music is not his usual genre of choice but acknowledges that it still "rocks." The chorus repeats the phrase "James Brown is dead" as a sort of refrain.

In the second verse, the singer describes how the confusion around Brown's death leads to "total chaos." The singer himself is "confused that things are gettin' hectic" and wonders if the whole thing could be a "big misunderstanding." The singer soon finds out that James Brown is, in fact, not dead, and is relieved that the "nightmare is over." The song ends with the singer declaring that he will now "get much respect from EmCees" (likely referring to other rappers/musicians), and that he knows he's "so bad" (meaning good).

Overall, the lyrics of "James Brown is Dead" reflect the impact that James Brown had on the music industry and the shock and confusion that surrounded his rumored death.

Man, the early 90's were absolutely amazing, dance clubs everywhere it didn't matter if you could dance or not people just had fun

@TRUBLU13

Magical times

It's 2023, and I can still literally feel the club floor moving under my feet with energy this song brought to the dance floor as though 1991 was last year.

@AllOuttaBubblegum123

Yes, still makes me rush me bollix off

Finally, someone with the original 91 version. This song electrified clubs like the limelight and the palladium in NYC back in the day. I remember when this song was played, everyone went insane and danced like there was no tomorrow. Too bad songs like this are short lived.

@jdeveraux1027

I was way too young to go to clubs when this came out (I think I was like 14); but I snuck into a dance club in Denver called "Rock Island" and danced my freakin ass off to this song. I remember slamming my head to the beat so hard, I'd have a headache when it was over. This was right around the time "techno" was become mainstream. I remember how awkward it was too, especially in "middle america." LOL

@villedocvalle

Yeah but we all still were there for when it hit and makes it all the more special
