Bill Carey was responsible for implementing two failed news formats at two New York City television stations. In late 1996, he released several staff members from WCBS before he announced a revamp of its news format in an attempt to increase the station’s viewership that had been declining since 1992 (culminating with a third place finish in mid-1995). The changes did not increase the station’s ratings enough even after the format was modified slightly in 1998 and a partial revamp was announced in 2000 when Joel Cheatwood came onboard. That partial revamp included a fast paced 11 pm newscast that lasted for 2 years. This format would end in 2003 and a traditional newscast would once again be restored after the station continued to remain in third place during the six years that this format would be employed.
In early 2010, Carey returned to New York, this time acting as news director at WPIX. He would release several anchors at that station and changed the station’s newscast format in an attempt to increase the station’s ratings, which have been declining since the WB ceased operations in September 2006. The format that was instituted caused the station’s viewership to decline to record lows for a short period between late 2011 and early 2012 after an initial small increase, which resulted in Carey leaving the station in late 2012. In 2014, a traditional format would be restored to that station’s newscasts.
