L. Dalla Lyrics

Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima
Confondono i pensieri
Così diventa tutto piccolo
Anche le notti là in America
Ti volti e vedi la tua vita
Come la scia di un'elica
Ma sì, è la vita che finisce
Ma lui non ci pensò poi tanto
Anzi si sentiva già felice
E ricominciò il suo canto
Te voglio bene assaje
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
È una catena ormai
E scioglie il sangue dint' 'e vene sai
Te voglio bene assaje
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
È una catena ormai
E scioglie il sangue dint' 'e vene sai
The song "Caruso" by L. Dalla tells the story of a man who is singing about a love that has become so intense that it is painful. He begins by describing a beautiful, windy night on an old terrace overlooking the Gulf of Sorrento where he sees a man embracing a woman after she had been crying. The man then clears his voice and begins to sing a song dedicated to his love. The singer then goes on to describe the power of the love that he feels for his own lover, saying that it is like an unbreakable chain that has melted his blood and veins.
Later in the song, he describes how the man he had seen earlier looks out at the sea and sees lights, reminiscing about his nights in America. However, he realizes that the lights are only lampare in the white wake of a boat propeller. The man feels pain in the music, gets up from the piano and looks into the eyes of his lover, which make him forget the lyrics and unclear his thoughts. He then describes how everything, including his own life, feels small in the presence of his lover, but he feels happy and starts singing again. The song concludes by repeating the phrase “Te voglio bene assaje, ma tanto tanto bene sai”, meaning "I love you so much, you know that, so much that it melts my blood and veins."

Qui dove il mare luccica
Here where the sea shines
E tira forte il vento
And the wind blows strong
Su una vecchia terrazza
On an old terrace
Davanti al golfo di Surriento
In front of the Gulf of Sorrento
Un uomo abbraccia una ragazza
A man embraces a woman
Dopo che aveva pianto
After she had cried
Poi si schiarisce la voce
Then he clears his voice
E ricomincia il canto
And begins to sing again
Te voglio bene assaje
I love you so much
Ma tanto tanto bene sai
But you know, oh so well
È una catena ormai
It's a chain now
That melts the blood in the veins, you know
Vide le luci in mezzo al mare
He saw the lights in the middle of the sea
Pensò alle notti là in America
He thought of the nights in America
Ma erano solo le lampare
But they were only the lamps
Nella bianca scia di un'elica
In the white wake of a propeller
Sentì il dolore nella musica
He felt the pain in the music
Si alzò dal pianoforte

Even death seemed sweeter to him
Guardò negli occhi la ragazza
He looked into the girl's eyes
Quegli occhi verdi come il mare

Poi all'improvviso uscì una lacrima
Then suddenly a tear fell
E lui credette di affogare
And he thought he was drowning

Ti volti e vedi la tua vita
