It's very peculiar that we (The Left Banke) never thought we were anything special. We were ripped apart by Robert Cristgau of the Village Voice, and most other bands were into hard rock and psychedelic stuff. We always sounded better after we put the vocals on. but once the money for "Walk Away Renée" started coming in. Our very own manager/producer/publisher and others went crazy trying to get all of it. It was the "Goose that layed the golden egg time" Whatever!!! We were too young and immature to handle everything. We tried but, KABOOM!!! We left a few nice records.

Pretty Ballerina and Walk away Renee have always been 2 of my favorite songs from back then... They had such a unique soothing sound.... A breakaway from the Heavy Rock.... Great harmony. @Bill D. Yes Bill. In 1966 I was only 9 but we were the most mod, hip, grooviest kids in our school. We wore all the latest grooviest threads, had all the pop/rock 45 singles and LPs, and had variations of the “Beatle haircut,” Beatle boots with steel horseshoe cleats on the Cuban heels, I wore yellow-colored “granny glasses,” danced all the latest dance crazes and we were just really into it!
Despite all the things going on in the world around us and perhaps not always having a perfect family situation, we were totally immersed and somewhat sheltered in an incredibly fun, exciting outta-sight colorful bubble! A creative, wonderful renaissance era with so much tasteful art in all areas of pop culture for young people to participate in never to be seen, heard of, or repeated or replicated ever again. God has been so kind as to give and script for me the life I had during my childhood!

As a songwriter and producer (Brainstorm, Detroit band, and my own) I can say the originality of the melody is one of the hallmarks of the 60's--- the flatted 5th was not at all a usual tool employed in popular music. This song belongs with Eleanor Rigby as a nod to the impressionist classical composers. Beautiful! Still after 50 years.......

The 1960's and early 70's where extraordinary and turbulent time period to say the leas. For those of us who where there the music of that time help get us through it all. The Left Banke, left their mark with "Walk Away Renée" and "Pretty Ballerina" and one of the best debut record album by a garage band in my opinion. Thanks guys

I was in 6th grade when Pretty Ballerina and Walk Away Rene were popular. I loved these songs by The Left Banke! I had been playing violin for 3yrs at school and loved the orchestration in their music. Beautifully creative and haunting.

What a beautifully haunting song! I'll never forget the first time I heard it. I was listening to a Golden Oldie's station, on my way to hockey practice, at midnight, on a cold January night, in 1983. My car wasn't quite warmed up yet as I began my drive, and this song came on. I was mesmerized by it and couldn't get it out of my head all night, at least what I could remember of it. The DJ mentioned it was performed by the Left Banke, and I thought: "Oh wow! They do "Just walk away Rene". I had to go buy the 45. Little did I know that "Pretty Ballerina" was on the flip side of "Just Walk Away Rene"!! What a treat!!

This is without doubt one of, if not THE, finest singles of the 60's. How a bunch of kids could come up with such a beautiful and haunting melody is beyond me - the middle section when the strings kick in can make me very emotional for reasons I can't explain (similarly when the orchestra kicks in on the Spoonful's 'Darling Be Home Soon). Imagine music of this quality in the charts now and weep for what we've lost.

A perfect musical gem. Alas, you'll not find its like in the popular music of today. The beautiful harmony and instrumentation (I have to fight off tears when the oboe comes in), and the brilliant singing. The Left Banke could do great vocal harmony, but they were wise and chose a solo vocalist, adding to the heartbreaking vulnerability.

James - you just summed up my feelings entirely about this song. What you say about the entrance of the oboe is exactly what I experience when I hear it - it stirs unknown emotions in me that can sometimes make me cry even when I'm feeling good. I get a similar spine-tingling feeling when the orchestra kicks in on 'Darling Be Home Soon" by The Lovin' Spoonful. Pretty Ballerina is a work of genius in my opinion.

The Left Banke created this unique baroque rock sound during the British Invasion period of the 60's. A truly innovative sound, they lasted only briefy with this and their '67 hit "Pretty Ballerina" which is a must for those who enjoy this style. We're so fortunate to have these historic videos to give the baby boomers another chance to hear them. It seems that many of these great songs of the ages have endurance. Can't imagine ever listening to 40- 50 year old music when we were younger.

This is a beautiful song. It was so different from most other pop music even amidst the rich environment of '66-'67 pop era. The lead vocalist hits all the high notes perfectly. This wasn't played by the rock music stations in my area nearly enough! One of my favorites from that period!

This is one of those songs that I heard in my youth, making a memory that I had to pursue to hear it again. Back in the day, I didn't quite grok the meaning of the lyrics, but there was enough connection to hold it in my long term memory. As I listen to it now, it strikes me as an homage to our most meaningful desire for heterosexual love with someone we idolized beyond her humanity. That's how so many women are wrecked when our ideal can't exist. As a for instance of the transformation, look at The Killers video in which a gorgeous young woman is shown to have dream busting humanity.

This hauntingly beautiful song really represents the uniqueness of the mid-60's that was unique unto itself, very different from either the early and late sections. The oboe was unique to 'rock' in this era, as was the interest of 1700's fashions (for men) as seen here.

Like this song says, "just close your eyes...." Whenever I hear this, I DO close my eyes and I'm transported to that place in time. And it feels incredible, and the music takes me somewhere else...way better than Calgon, if anyone remembers that old commercial. The song is so.hauntingly gorgeous that it always brings a tear to my eye. 😌

More like bittersweet how a beautiful song can bring back such good feelings and memories...eventually, you'll hopefully in time enjoy the song without it making you feel sad. 😞. You eventually will hear it and shed a happy tear for all the great time you've spent together. 😅 🙏

Thank you very much for this forgotten little gem from the "Left Banke". I fully agree with you about the paucity of today's music repertoire. Also, at least in the NorthEast, most of the few radio stations that play Oldies use syndicated music selection from major distributors with the result of most of us hearing the same melodies over and over again. We have very few local DJ's that would enlighten us with some of the history of those lesser known groups. Thank you again to you and Jacqui.

This was brought to my attention watching a programme with Leonard Bernstein discussing popular music, from 1967. He cited this one as being a favourite of his, and indeed it is rather fabulous. The mid sixties is like a never ending archaeological dig of treasures.

Emlyn Williams I totally agree. The mid '60s is something unique and unto itself in the '60s; unlike the early or late '60s, extending into early 1967.

Man, I don’t know if it was hormones, or what, but when I was 16 (1986), my sister and I were driving around enjoying the radio. This song came on and I just got wrapped up in it... and just start bawling.

It was so beautiful and sweet that I couldn’t help it. My sister slowly looked over at me and burst out laughing. I was sooo embarrassed. It ruined my “image”, ha ha. She still makes fun of me for it to this day!

A little while later, we got the album and thought the whole thing was fantastic!

i always thought i had a terrific childhood and a charmed life but the real happiness comes from all the great 60's bands i loved, all the great unique groups like this and the wrecking crew backed bands too. love the 60's forever

Was just buzzing around the house and yard the other day and this sweet melody and the words 'She'll be there, she'll be there, she'll be there' popped into my head. Had to think for a bit to recall where I'd heard these haunting words... Truly one of the favorite songs of my youth. So sad that the quality of music has gone down so much in recent years. You might hear 1 or 2 good tunes a year any more. Feel very fortunate that I was born into the decades of music that changed the world.

I'm really happy with the feedback from this video page [comments] So many comments for videos are made by know nothing's that talk like they were there back in '1966 & 1967. With the comments on this page I can feel a conection with many of the folks.
The Left Banke were Michael Brown, Steve Martin Caro, George Cameron & Tom Finn.
It was my idea to bring Michael Brown on stage, and I arranged it so his wife & kids would be there to see their dad play with his old band. I had to leave the reorganized group because I suffered a serious spinal malfunction/disease which left me 50% paralyzed. Anyway, again thank you all for making these comments intelligent and heartfelt. Best to you all Tom Finn ~ The Left Banke

Have to go with John Bond on this, Tom. I thought the Left Banke was something new, fresh and different right off the git-go. I even recently DL'd the karaoke versions of Rene and Ballerina, just so I can sing them in my car. I once was overheard by another driver who asked me if I was the one who recorded it. I felt embarrassed and complimented at the same time. :)

Mr. Finn, It's a pleasure having you here and I've been thrilled reading the comments and messages. Although I'm just a novice at video making, I tried to take great care in putting some images together.... for those who love and those just discovering this unique and wonderful music. I was 15 when Pretty Ballerina was released, and it still is at the top of my list of 60's favorites. As older adults, we are able to learn and appreciate through sites like YT, the 'back stories' to many songs we grew up with. So thank you for sharing the story behind your music.
