Brother
LIVING ROOM - Mac Demarco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shit

You're no better off
Living your life
Than dreaming at night
This much is true
But it's still up to you
To take my advice

So take it slowly, brother
Let it go now, brother
Take it slowly, brother
Let it go
Go home, go home
Go home, go home

You're better off dead
When your mind's been set
From nine until five
How could it be true
Well it's happened to you
So take my advice

And take it slowly, brother
Let it go now, brother
Take it slowly, brother
Let it go
Go home, go home
Go home, go home
Go home, go home
Go home, go home

Ah, ah, ah, ah

Overall Meaning

In Mac DeMarco's song "Brother", the lyrics convey a message about living a stagnant and mundane life. The line "You're no better off living your life than dreaming at night" suggests that simply going through the motions of a daily routine without actively pursuing goals or dreams can feel just as empty as not living at all. The repetition of "take my advice" throughout the song implies that the singer has learned from experience and is urging the listener to avoid making the same mistakes.

The chorus repeats the phrase "take it slowly, brother" followed by "let it go now, brother." This could be interpreted as encouragement to slow down and not rush through life without enjoying the moment, or perhaps to let go of the pressure to constantly achieve and just enjoy life as it comes. The line "You're better off dead" may sound morbid, but it could also mean that living a dull life without purpose or passion can feel like a kind of death.

Overall, "Brother" is a commentary on the importance of living a fulfilling life and pursuing one's dreams rather than just going through the motions of a mundane existence. The repeated use of "brother" throughout the song suggests a sense of camaraderie or kinship between the singer and the listener, emphasizing the importance of looking out for one another and offering advice and guidance.

This is one of Mac's lesser-known masterpieces. I put this song every time I need some encouragement in my life. I didn't discover Mac's music until fairly recently and I wonder where his tunes have been all these years. Better late than never, though.

This is my favorite Mac song, just feels like a pat on the back when I really need one. It's really special to me and always makes me feel better even if things are hard. Thanks Mac.
