Casanova
LUV Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the summer of '75 he said, "You'll play a part in my life"
In the autumn of '75 he said, "Would you, would you be my wife?"
In the winter of '76 he said, "Thanks for the wonderful time
I'm not the type of a familyman
You go your way, so I go mine"

He's such a Casanova
If you meet the man, do remember then, keep away from the sofa
He's such a Casanova
In the dancin' place, you will know the face by the glance of his eyes
He'll come and ask you for some tango
He'll say, you're dancin' quite allright
You're drinking too much vino
With him, you can stay the night
He's such a Casanova
In the dancin' place, you will know the face by the glance of his eyes

Tainted leather boots over tight pants
Open shirt and well manicured hands
Shiny chain 'round the wrist and the neck
Ooh, that man is as sharp as a tack
If you want him, to me it's allright, though you know, you're not bein' smart
There's only one thing I guarantee you, that one day soon, he'll break your heart

He's such a Casanova
If you meet the man, do remember then, keep away from the sofa
He's such a Casanova
In the dancin' place, you will know the face by the glance of his eyes
He'll come and ask you for some tango
He'll say, you're dancin' quite allright
You're drinking too much vino
With him, you can stay the night

He's such a Casanova

He's such a Casanova
If you meet the man, do remember then, keep away from the sofa
He's such a Casanova
In the dancin' place, you will know the face by the glance of his eyes

He's such a Casanova
If you meet the man...

Overall Meaning

The song "Casanova" by Luv' tells the story of a man who is known for his charm and ability to seduce women. The lyrics describe his encounters with different women over time, starting with a woman who he promised he would marry in the autumn of '75, only to later tell her in the winter of '76 that he was not the type for a family and that they should part ways. Despite his reputation as a Casanova, the man continues to attract women with his good looks, impeccable style, and dancing skills. The singer warns other women to keep away from him, as he is only after one thing and will eventually break their hearts.

The song is a cautionary tale about the dangers of falling for someone who has a history of using and discarding women. It highlights the importance of being aware of red flags and not getting caught up in someone's charm without considering their track record. The lyrics are also a nod to the disco era, with references to dancing, drinking, and fashionable clothing.

Part of the key to the huge success of Luv' was that every element of their delivery was technically impeccable, but they never compromised heart. Combine that with their relentless optimism (after all, they are singing here about a long term liar who cheated on them) and those larger than life harmonies (every time they hit that power chord on "You go your way, and I'll go mine", it just absolutely DESTROYS me - wow!), and you have a mission statement that worked not just on Casanova, but also on You're The Greatest Lover, Ooh Yes I Do, Trojan Horse and all of those other sublime singles they did. For my money, Patty, Marga and Jose are as good as it gets in that genre. Absolute, utter perfection. .

It didn't really matter what they sang about. Their audience in the 1970s did not really speak enough English to know what the songs were about, and the lyrics were really not really matter anyway.
