Mes lèvres
L (Raphaële Lannadère) Lyrics

Embrasées dans un tourbillon
Carillonnant, plein de promesses
En confettis et cotillons
Alors que tout autour de moi
Semblait vibrer, tourbillonner
Dans des éclats, de rires gras
Je les avais brûlées pour toi
Fardées de rouge et puis d'étoiles
Amassées, cachées sous mon voile
À l'aube, en te croyant mon roi
Mes lèvres sont mortes à minuit
Mes lèvres sont mortes d'ivresse
Embrasées dans un tourbillon
Carillonnant, plein de promesses
En confettis et cotillons
Bien sûr, tu m'avais prévenue
Venant après de moi, que toi
Tu ne te mettrais pas à nu
Que tu venais par désarroi
Mais tes mains, tu me les tendais
Tes mains trop grandes, et tes doigts d'or
Quand dans ta nuit, tu m'as couché
In this song, L (Raphaële Lannadère) is narrating the story of her intoxicated lips or 'Mes lèvres' which were burning with passion and desire for someone she loved. The lyrics appear to be set on New Year's Eve when L put on rouge lipstick and covered her lips with stars. She was awaiting someone she believed to be her king, but what followed was an unexpected intimacy which left her lips burned and parched. The hands of this person were too big for her petite frame but still, she allowed herself to be held in their comforting embrace. As the clock struck midnight, L's lips were lifeless and the celebratory confetti seemed to mirror her scattered emotions.
The use of the metaphor ‘Mes lèvres sont mortes…’ (My lips are dead…) is a powerful indication of the intensity of her emotions. The presence of the imagery of the carnival with the use of ‘confettis et cotillons’ (confetti and party poppers) is a subtle contrast to the underlying feelings of frustration, pain, and sorrow within L. There is also an undercurrent of regret and the narrative seems to display the aftermath of recklessness and unstable emotions. The song doesn't try to resolve the issues or sorrow, but lays it bare for the listener to interpret.

Mes lèvres sont mortes d’ivresse,
My lips have died from excess, consumed by a whirlwind of pleasure and excitement
Embrasées dans un tourbillon,
Ignited by a vortex of emotions
Carillonnant plein de promesses,
Ringing with promises and hope
En confettis et cotillons
In colorful confetti and streamers
Alors que tout autour de moi,
While everything around me
Semblait vibrer, tourbillonner,
Seemed to vibrate and spin in excitement
Dans des éclats de rires gras,
In bursts of crude laughter
Mes lèvres se sont desséchées
My lips became dry and parched
Je les avais brûlées pour toi,
I had burned them for you
Fardées de rouge et puis d’étoiles,
Painted with red lipstick and stars
Amassées, cachées sous mon voile,
Gathered and hidden beneath my veil
A l’aube en te croyant mon roi.
At dawn, believing you were my king
Mes lèvres sont mortes à minuit
My lips died at midnight
Bien sûr, tu m’avais prévenue,
Of course, you had warned me
Venant après de moi, que toi,
Coming after me, that you
Tu ne te mettrais pas à nu,
You would not reveal yourself completely
Que tu venais par désarroi,
That you came in a state of distress
Mais tes mains, tu me les tendais,
But you offered me your hands
Tes mains trop grandes et tes doigts d’or,
Your hands too big with golden fingers
Je les ai laissés me serrer,
I let them hold me tight
Ils sont à la taille de mon corps.
They fit perfectly around my body
Quand dans ta nuit, tu m’as couchée,
When you laid me down in your night
C’est à ma bouche que tu pressais,
Pressing against my mouth
Ta tête lourde et ta douleur,
Your heavy head and pain
J’étais ton ange, ta douceur
I was your angel, your sweetness
Veilleuse de nuit, j’ai posé
As a night light, I placed
Mes doigts sur tes yeux enfoncés,
My fingers on your sunken eyes
Car je les sentais exploser,
Because I felt them about to burst
Tes yeux, au creux de ta pensée.
Your eyes, deep in your thoughts.
Ton ange, dans ce tourbillon,
Your angel, in this whirlwind
Rêvait, quand ses lèvres ont pris feu,
Dreaming when her lips caught fire
Elles brûlaient pour le réveillon
Burning for the New Year's Eve
Dans une brèche de tes yeux
In a breach of your eyes
Au premier son du carillon,
At the first sound of the chime
Dont les douze coups m’ont réduite
Whose twelve strokes reduced me
En une pluie de cotillons
To a shower of streamers
Mes lèvres sont mortes à minuit.
My lips died at midnight.
