Hey Memphis
LaVern Baker Lyrics

Hey Memphis, won't you? Hey Memphis, won't you?
Hey Memphis, won't you kiss me once or twice?
Make me feel so nice, I'd never run
Hey Memphis, I won't do what my big sister done

Well, you dated my big sister
You took her to a show
You went for some candy, along came Jim Dandy
And they snuck right out of the door
Hey Memphis, won't you? Hey Memphis, won't you?
Hey Memphis, won't you kiss me once or twice?
Make me feel so nice, I'd never run
Hey Memphis, I won't do what my big sister done

Every time you saw my sister
She had somebody new
She's mean and she's evil like that little ol' boll weevil
But I won't do the same to you

Hey Memphis, won't you? Hey Memphis, won't you?
Hey Memphis, won't you kiss me once or twice?
Make me feel so nice, I'd never run
Hey Memphis, I won't do what my big sister done

Well, you used to pull my pigtails
And punch my turned-up nose
But I've been a-growing and baby, it's been showing
From my head down to my toes

Hey Memphis, won't you? Hey Memphis, won't you?
Hey Memphis, won't you kiss me once or twice?
And make me feel so nice, I'd never run
Whoa, hey Memphis, I won't do what my big sister done

Hey Memphis, I won't do what my big sister done
Ah, hey Memphis, I won't do what my big sister done

Saucy for a woman of African descent to sing this to Elvis in 1961. You go LaVern Baker!

Wanda Mundy

Why not ?!? It was only fair. It was well-known that he got his jump at fame for singing songs already recorded by People of Colour.

@cocka heuck no she didn't!!!!!!!!!!!

Robin Markowitz

It was wonderfully gutsy! They admired each other.

cocka heuck. Elvis did before Lavern. This is a answer song Elvis' Little Sister.

cocka heuck

I thought Lavern did before
Elvis

Francesco Benati

It's clearly an answer to Little Sister, since "Memphis" is Elvis himself.

Gerhard Piontek

Tolle Songs und stark bis zum schluß.

Elvis' record was first. As has been pointed out "Memphis" is a pseudonym for Elvis in this instance. The song was written by Doc Pomus & Mort Schuman who were white. The whole racial prism through which some of you choose to look through when listening to this music is a piece of garbage & you should throw it away.

The male bass voice sounds like Bobby Phillips of the Cadillacs. Anyone know who it is?
