Corine
La Crevette d'Acier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Christophe repasse ton B.E.P
Et on en r’parlera après
Christophe furax quitte le resto
Fait crisser les pneus d’la Clio
Alors que Nostalgie entame
Comme toi de Jean-Jacques Goldman

Mais le gaillard est rancunier
Et au lieu d’aller se coucher
Profite des torpeurs de la nuit
Et fout le feu à la quincaillerie
Elle voudrait partir la Corine
Aller plus loin que la colline
Le jour se lève sur Décembre
Et la Quincaillerie est en cendres
Corine le regard fiévreux
Chausse ses bottes de 7 lieues
Disparaît derrière la colline

On l’aurait aperçue en Chine
On l’aurait aperçue en Chine

Overall Meaning

The song "Corine" by La Crevette d'Acier tells the story of a young woman, Corine, who dreams of leaving her small town and starting a new life. However, as the owner of the local hardware store, she feels obligated to stay and take care of it. Her escape comes in the form of spending Saturdays at the town bar with her friends, where they talk and text each other.

Corine has given up on the idea of finding her prince charming, and instead finds herself settling for Christophe, a kick-boxing enthusiast and tuning fanatic who drives a customised blue Clio. He takes her to the Buffalo Grill and proposes to her, promising to buy an apartment next to his parents so they can be close to them if they have children. He even offers her a garage as a wedding gift from his father.

However, the happiness is short-lived when Christophe is told to get his BEP (qualification certificate) before they can move forward with their plans. He becomes angry and leaves the restaurant in a hurry, setting fire to Corine's hardware store in a fit of rage. The song ends with Corine disappearing over the hill, with rumours circulating that she has been seen in China.

Overall, the song speaks to the struggles of small-town life and the desire for something more, as well as the consequences of settling for comfort over dreams. The character of Corine is a strong-willed woman who wants more than what her small town can offer, and the tragedy of the fire highlights the destructive power of frustration.
