Fall Down Never Get Back Up Again
La Dispute Lyrics

Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again :
Out where the stones lay like bones by the ocean
Out where the waves crash contempt on the land
Someone was trembling for fear of the tempest
Somebody silently reached for their hand
Said, understand that if you're cold I'll keep you warm
And besides, there's so much beauty in a storm
So come down with me to the shore
And what's more, I adore you
So tell me, what is there to fear
You think some seraph up above is trying to rob us of our love
Because the sky's not clear
My dear, you know there's not
Now listen to the rain upon the rooftop
But the wind picked up

Out where the stones stand up like thrones beside the ocean
Out where the waves make a grave of the sea
The lovers struggled in the middle of the tempest
And water angrily crawled up onto the beach
Said, hold my hand and stay with me
We'll be released
But the tide clung like an anchor to her feet
And though he tried to make the water line recede
It pulled her out into the sea
He could not break apart the waves to bring her safely back in
He watched her hand break through the surface once
Then disappear again
Forever wait inside the sea for my, my dear
I hear you
You speak in every curling wave
And sing in every violent breeze
Someday not far away from here
My dear, I swear I'll see you
And we will hear the seraphs cry
For they will still envy you and I
How they envied you and I

How they envied you and I
How they envied you and I

Overall Meaning

"Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again" by La Dispute is a poignant song that's full of metaphors and symbolism. The opening lines itself set a somber tone with the mention of stones that lie like bones by the ocean. The harsh and rough nature of the sea is compared to a tempest that makes someone tremble in fear. But amidst all this, there's someone who extends their hand in comfort, assuring the other person that if they're cold, they'll keep them warm. The metaphorical storm is juxtaposed with the beauty of it, and the person invites the other to join them on the shore.

As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the two people in question are lovers, who are standing in the midst of the storm, on the beach, trying to battle the waves. The imagery of the waves making a grave of the sea is haunting, and the lovers appear to be struggling to stay afloat. The man tries to hold on to the woman's hand, but the tide clings to her feet, and she drowns. The final verse is a homage to their lost love, and the singer promises to keep her memory alive, to hear her voice in every wave, and to see her again someday.

This is so deep, especially when you've drowned before and know people who have died drowning or almost died drowning

How are they still so underrated. I remember jamming to them like whoa they're going to be HUGE. Nope. They really deserved more.

@AtibaVV

hell yeah la dispute underground legends fasho their very influential on my music. I start listening to la dispute because of a girl I had a crush on in freshman year of highschool. Its been a longtime since then but this album and wildlife both helped me explore those feelings at that age. the honesty in bros lyrics and the whole bands delivery always keeps me coming back

@weeddemon97

I feel so old. This is the first song I ever heard by them

@cartermonroe951

Their music is beyond regular music, a poem brought to life.

@musicismyfavorite777

La Dispute is like a new genre. Oh man how refreshing this band is. They're so much more than a band, they're pure artists.

12 years later, and 12 likes later on your comment, they still haven’t been recognized for it.

@jonahshriver3358

@@eskimojesus907 And they won't be until they're long dead. It's the unfortunate outcome for the greatest artists of the human race.

@MeSarcasticjellyfish

They have such strong lyrics, unlike some bands that just growl randomly, they sing a story. That is what I love about them the most

@eskimojesus907

11 years later I’m here to tell you, this is based on an Edgar Allen Poe poem. Said lyrics are 90% written by someone else 😅

@trevor4622

The pain behind his voice brings me to tears. The way La Dispute tells a story is incredible.
