Such Small Hands
La Dispute Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think I saw you in my sleep, darling,
I think I saw you in my dreams you were
Stitching up the seams on every broken promise
That your body couldn't keep
I think I saw you in my sleep

I thought I heard the door open, oh no,
I thought I heard the door open but
I only heard it close

I thought I heard a plane crashing, but
Now I think it was your passion snapping

I think you saw me confronting my fear, it
Went up with a bottle and went down with the beer and
I think you ought to stay away from here
There are ghosts in the walls and they
Crawl in your head through your ear

I think I saw you in my sleep, lover,
I think I saw you in my dreams you were
Stitching up the seams on every mangled promise

That your body couldn't keep
I think I saw you in my sleep

Overall Meaning

La Dispute's "Such Small Hands" is a poetic examination of the pain of a shattered relationship. The opening lines showcase the singer's confusion, as he admits seeing his former partner in his dreams. But instead of a positive, comforting feeling of nostalgia, we see a much different side of things, where the image of his lover's presence is only associated with the thought of broken promises. The use of the metaphor of "stitching up the seams" over here is intriguing because it depicts the futility of trying to fix what has been irrevocably broken.

The next stanza builds on this feeling of confusion and suggests that the singer hears the door opening and closing but only returns to the idea of the unhappy end result. The character confesses to thinking he had heard a plane crashing, but it was, in fact, his partner's passion for something else snapping. This alludes to the love ending with a clash of interests.

Towards the end of the song, the narrative brings together multiple things where the singer self-destructs to deal with distress as his partner sees him, culminating into a catastrophic end. It is a poignant song about heartbreak, disillusionment, and regret that taken together impress upon us the power of La Dispute as a lyricist.

Guys, this guy isn't meant to sound pleasing to the ear. He is deliberately trying to sound broken and and emotional.
