La Dispute Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In that princedom by the sea.
But we loved with a love that was
more than just love,
With a love even the seraphs up in heaven covet.

And that was the reason that long ago,
In that princedom asleep by the sea,
That a wind shut her body in a sepulcher,
Buried in the sea,
That bore my sweet darling away from me.

Oh, the angels they envied us—envied our love.
Yes, that was the reason the wind came out,
Stirred the air and made the waves shake madly,
Killing my Annabel Lee. Oh my Annabel Lee.

Our love it was strong. So strong
That neither the angels up in heaven
Nor the demons in the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the
Soul of my Annabel Lee.

Overall Meaning

In La Dispute's song Three, the lyrics are a poetic adaptation of a poem by Edgar Allan Poe called Annabel Lee. The song is about a maiden named Annabel Lee and the love she shares with the singer. The song describes their love as a pure, innocent, and strong form of love that even the angels up in heaven envy. However, their love is cut short when Annabel Lee dies and her body is buried in a sepulcher by the sea. The singer believes that it was the envy of the angels that caused her death and that their love is so strong that it cannot be broken even in death. Overall, the song is a tragic and melancholic tribute to the power of love and the pain of loss.

One interesting fact about La Dispute's song Three is that it was written as a tribute to Edgar Allan Poe's poem Annabel Lee. The song lyrics borrow heavily from the poem, which is considered to be one of Poe's most famous works. Another interesting fact is that La Dispute is known for their emotionally charged lyrics and spoken-word delivery, which can be seen in Three. The band is also known for their experimentation with different genres such as post-hardcore, emo, and spoken-word poetry.

I had to recite this poem in my 7th grade language arts class. It's my favorite poem of all time. Edgar Allan Poe was and still is a genius of words. <3

I love how poetic they are and how they draw inspiration from other incredible poets but they themselves are also incredible poets

@maymarie97

This is like an earlier version of "Fall down, Never get back up again" Mixed with a Poe poem. Mind=Blown

I love this poem. And I love his voice. I could feel the sadness and anger, as if he had really lost his Annabel. This is a pretty popular poem for musicians, it seems. ALESANA's album, The Emptiness is based off of this poem, with some embellishments. I shook listening to this. It's that awesome.
