San Martin was the vocalist until Amaia Montero joined the band by request from Benegas, just after he met her at a dinner party. Much later, the band played at El Concurso de Pop/Rock de San Sebastián, at which they were discovered and later signed by Sony Music.
Their first album, Dile al Sol (Tell The Sun), debuted in 1998; it went to the top of the Spanish music charts, and won the Premio Ondas to The very best Album of the Year. After numerous tours, the group released two more albums, El Viaje de Copperpot (Copperpot's Journey) and Lo que te Conté Mientras te Hacias la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended To Be Asleep) as well as two DVDs: La Oreja De Van Gogh with material from their first two records, and a live performance called Lo que te Conté Mientras te Hacias la Dormida Gira 2003'.
Their songs are written (both lyrics and music) mostly by Xabi San Martín and Amaia Montero in collaboration with Pablo Benegas, and the themes are usually love, friendship, or whatever comes up in a relationship between two people.
Their fourth album, Guapa, was released April 25th 2006. At the end of 2006, the re-edition of this album, called Más Guapa was released. It was met with wide critical success.
Since their debut, they have sold more than 6 million copies worldwide of their four albums. In November 2007, lead singer Amaia Montero announced that she would be leaving the group to begin a solo career. Her replacement, Leire Martínez, was announced in July 2008, along with the band's first single El Último Vals from their album titled A las cinco en el Astoria which was released on September 2, 2008. Leire was discovered on the Spanish reality show Factor X.
Viejo cuento
La Oreja de Van Gogh Lyrics

El mundo dormía, ahora
En un banco encontré el cuento
Con el que ríes, amas y lloras
Todos estos fríos años
Al abrigo de un saludo
Creíamos en algo raro
Que aún hoy descansa
Descansa mudo
La silueta que el sol dibujó
Trajo un vacío de sombras
La silueta que el sol dibujó
Nos descubrió tantas cosas
Pero esta vieja cuento
Tiene una hoja en blanco
Esa que habla de ti
La que te hace llorar tanto
La que te hace llorar tanto
La silueta que el sol dibujó
Trajo un vacío de sombras
La silueta que el sol dibujó
Nos descubrió tantas cosas
La silueta que el sol dibujó
Trajo un vacío de sombras
Y al regreso de las flores, yo
Mi calma dejó de estar sola
The lyrics of "Viejo Cuento" by La Oreja de Van Gogh describe a profound moment of self-reflection and realization. The first lines set the scene of a calm night by the sea, where the world is asleep and the singer finds a story on a bench. This story becomes a symbol of the different emotions that one can experience in life, from laughter to tears. The second verse talks about a belief that had been held for many years, but has now lost its voice and faded away.
The following lines talk about the sun casting shadows that reveal new truths and insights. But the story in question also has a blank page, one that speaks of the singer and makes them cry. This page represents the unresolved emotions and experiences that still haunt the singer. The final repetition of the lines about the sun's silhouette bringing shadows and discoveries symbolizes how the journey of introspection never truly ends, but rather continues to reveal new aspects of ourselves.

Comenzó meciéndonos el mar
The ocean started swaying us gently
El mundo dormía, ahora
The world was sleeping, but now
En un banco encontré el cuento
I found the story on a bench
Con el que ríes, amas y lloras
The one that makes you laugh, love, and cry
Todos estos fríos años
All these cold years
Al abrigo de un saludo
Under the shelter of a greeting
Creíamos en algo raro
We believed in something strange
Que aún hoy descansa mudo
That still rests in silence today
La silueta que el sol dibujó
The silhouette that the sun drew
Trajo un vacío de sombras
Brought an emptiness of shadows
Nos descubrió tantas cosas
It revealed so many things to us
Pero esta vieja cuento
But this old story
Tiene una hoja en blanco
Has a blank page
Esa que habla de ti
The one that talks about you
La que te hace llorar tanto
The one that makes you cry so much
