In mid-2005 we signed our first record deal with Dangerbird Records, situated in the heart of happening Silverlake. Chrysalis Publishing USA became our close friends this year too, so it is only right that we should pack our duffle bags and set up camp in the USA. We've just recorded an album with Mr. Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air, Supergrass, Belle & Sebastian) and can't wait to be travelling the world playing it to people this year. We look forward to giving you something original and inspiring when we meet.
Cats
La Rocca Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Did I make a little bit up
I did
I did
Did you turn away in doubt
Eat the food that they left out
I did
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
Going round all judgement bars
Making love in cars
Oh yes sir
No m'an
Taking odds I've never heard
Breaking almost every word
Yes sir
No m'an
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
Only for our faces
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
We go beyond that, so far we' cats
Did you march against the war
Nail a cross upon your door
Oh I did
The lyrics to La Rocca's song "Cats" are somewhat ambiguous and can be interpreted in a few different ways, but one common interpretation is that the song is about the idea of living a double life or hiding certain aspects of oneself from society. The lines "Did I make a little bit up / Did you turn away in doubt" suggest that the singer may have fabricated or exaggerated parts of their story, or that they feel like they're not being fully truthful with someone else. The idea of "eating the food that they left out" could be interpreted as taking advantage of opportunities that are presented to you, even if you know you shouldn't.
The lines "Only for our faces / We go beyond that, so far we' cats" suggest that the singer and whoever they're addressing are only putting on a certain face or persona for the benefit of others, but that they go further than that in their personal lives. The repetition of "Only for our faces" emphasizes the idea of this public-facing persona, while the repetition of "We go beyond that, so far we' cats" suggests that there's more going on behind closed doors that others aren't privy to.
The second verse reinforces this idea of living a double life, with lines like "Going round all judgement bars / Making love in cars" and "Taking odds I've never heard / Breaking almost every word." These behaviors could be seen as reckless or frowned upon by society, but the singer and their partner (assuming there is one) don't care about that because they're living their lives on their own terms. The final line, "Did you march against the war / Nail a cross upon your door / Oh I did," could be read as a commentary on the idea of performing activism or appearing to be a certain type of person in public, while not necessarily fully believing in or committing to those actions in private.
