Quicksand
La Roux污 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm the obsessor
Holding your hand
It seems you have forgotten
About your man
Alone in the darkness
My bed's a different land
Your touch intensifies
And I'm in the quicksand
I'm in the quicksand
I'm in the quicksand

You're the up-settor
Stroking my hand
What's my position?
I don't understand
Am I your position?
Am I enigma?
Oh, when you turn to me
I'm in the quicksand
I'm in the quicksand
I'm in the quicksand

You, you moved into to my mind again, oh
You, you're walking around again and free, oh
Oh, I can't let you stay
But I'm walking on broken ground again
Oh, when will I learn?
All you do is push me back in the dirt

Ah, ah
I'm in the quicksand
Oh-oh-oh-oh
I'm in the quicksand
Oh-oh-oh-oh
I'm in the quicksand

Oh-oh-oh-oh
I'm in the quicksand

Overall Meaning

The song Quicksand by La Roux is a reflection on a relationship that is unhealthy and addictive. The singer sings about being an "obsessor" and holding the hand of someone who has forgotten about their significant other. The singer is in darkness, and their bed is a different land, indicating that they are in a very different, darker place than they used to be. The touch of the other person intensifies the singer's feelings, and they feel like they are in quicksand, sinking deeper and deeper into their obsession.

The other person, who is referred to as the "up-settor," is stroking the singer's hand, but they don't understand their position. They wonder if they are just a position or an enigma, and they are confused about the nature of their relationship. When the other person turns to them, the singer feels like they are in quicksand again. They are conflicted because they feel like they can't let the other person stay, but they are also walking on broken ground again. They know that this relationship is not good for them, but they can't seem to break free from it.

The overall theme of the song is about addiction and unhealthy relationships. The singer is drawn to someone who is not good for them and can't seem to break free from their hold on them. The metaphor of quicksand is used to illustrate the feeling of being trapped and sinking deeper into an unhealthy situation.

For those questioning... Yes, that IS infact quicksand, the only difference is that there's more water contained in it.
Quicksand can be sand, clay or silt and water, which exists in areas where the sand is agitated.
When water in the sand cannot escape, it liquefies the soil and in many cases loses strength and cannot support the weight above.

With "dryer" quicksand you would sink faster, it's harder to pull yourself out because there may be no hard surface to find balance, but also much easier to be pulled out than muddy quicksand.

And even though every type of quicksand includes water (some more than others as in this case) "Wet" quicksand is muddy, you sink slower, because unlike "dryer" quicksand, muddy quicksand traps more water and whether you're pulling yourself out or being pulled out, it's just harder because of the friction caused by the water.

Think of it as trying to get up laying down on your stomach compared to your back without your hands supporting you, getting up from your stomach would be faster/easier than from your back.

Hope this helps, if you still don't get it...
Drink some coffee itll make you feel better☕️😂
