Reflections Are Protection
La Roux污 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please, please be my light filter
Shine, make me a shelter
To hide this love
Makes you lose your sign
Now the search rise is on its way
And the flood lights are on my face
All the shadows that I woke up in
Are just my volatile second skin

My reflections are protections
They will keep me from destruction
My directions are distractions
When you're ready come into the light

Lines, design a pathway
Shine, cut out the dark shapes
To find, although I really tried
Only time is a lover's guide
And now the ratings fall away
And the stencils draw a face
Our outlines in the sunset
Are just a fragile silhouette

My reflections are protections
They will keep me from destruction
My directions are distractions
When you're ready come into the light

My reflections are protections
They will keep me from destruction
My directions are distractions
If you leave me, I'll go back to hide

My reflections are protections
They will keep me from destruction
My directions are distractions
When you're ready come into the light

My reflections are protections
They will keep me from destruction

My directions are distractions
If you leave me, I'll go back to hide

Overall Meaning

In "Reflections Are Protection," La Roux sings about a love that must be kept hidden, like a second skin that protects the person from being destroyed. The singer implores their lover to be a light filter and a shelter, creating a safe space for their love. The chorus repeats that the singer's reflections and directions serve as a form of protection and distraction, but they also long for their lover to come into the light and be with them.

The song speaks to the fear and uncertainty that can come with a hidden love, the need to find a path forward through the darkness of secrecy, and the hope that someday they can be together openly. The use of reflective imagery and metaphors reinforces the theme of protection, while the urgent and pleading tone of the vocals adds to the sense of desperation and yearning.

Overall, "Reflections Are Protection" is a poignant and emotional song that explores the complexities of hidden love and the desire for safety and acceptance.

Oh, the update changed the HUD settings. That's pretty rough. I think I saw some artifacting for the first time in an early shot from hiding the marker, so it must have been complicated. Do you ever consider delaying recording if a feature that would help you is confirmed to be added? On the flipside, you mentioned noticing a lot of glitched detections in Valhalla. Something we figured out recently is that the bugs were introduced in an early patch and still haven't been fully resolved, although they have made some improvements many months after your movie. Were you ever able to play that version of the game?

The darks are too low in SDR right now. I had to adjust my monitor. There's something weird about the sound mixing too. The mids are really loud and constantly stepping on each other or drowning out muffled dialogue from the lows, and the whole thing is really quiet compared to the ads. The movement and camera work is a noticeable improvement, though. The soft pans during dynamic dialogue and deliberate focus on the setpieces really helps to deliver the gameplay elements of the story

I love the travel montages in these. Rather than following the game's mission layout, these are your own cinematography. It's become an important part of what makes your movies so unique

Did HFW add a way to quickswap weapons, or are you trimming out the exact frames with the weapon wheel visible? Aloy's visual design is also a lot more consistent. Is there a visual customization override or did you choose to keep your starting armor?

I'll finish this one tomorrow. Might leave you another comment💜

Yeah it was right before the last few missions where the HUD options changed. I would have liked to have those options earlier on. I tried using VFX to remove all the objective markers earlier on, but it proved too big of a task, so I gave up on that about 15 minutes into the movie. Although Aloy mentions using her focus to find the way forward at that part, so it kind of works haha. My projections were telling me I'd be done in October if I kept trying to do that lol, although I do know for a fact some of them would have been impossible to reconstruct with VFX. I still used VFX for button prompts and certain on screen text like "mission complete / level up" things which happened in a few missions, specifically when one mission transitioned directly into the next.

As for delaying, it wasn't confirmed that any changes would be coming, and even if it was, without a definite timeline to expect that, I wouldn't delay. I had to delay recording already because of how long it took me to beat the game for my first playthrough, so I wouldn't want to delay it further unless they had specifically said the updated HUD settings were coming in the next week or something.

No I haven't gone back to Valhalla lol aside from the crossover with Odyssey, but that was short.

I graded the SDR on my OLED TV that is perfectly calibrated to the rec709/bt1886 standard, which was calibrated for viewing with the lights on, which should have only helped the shadow definition, so I'm not sure what's going on there. Some displays might clip the darkest blacks if they're not set up correctly, and I know some devices do that in a way that is impossible to correct for, but for accurately calibrated displays, the image should look good. Some of my older movies (in particular, Fallen Order and Valhalla) had washed out shadows, so it was my goal to avoid that this time by doing the color grading on a properly calibrated display.

I didn't modify the sound mix from the game at all, aside from one scene where dialogue was too quiet because of the rain sound effects, but there were definitely areas when I was playing that it felt like the sound wasn't mixed well. I think it might have something to do with PS5's audio processing chip, which handles audio in a 3D space, rather than standard surround sound. Even though I'm outputting to 5.1, the internal audio is likely processed in 3D, and then rendered to 5.1 by the chip. It's possible that the final render from that format is not ideal for 5.1 systems, or at least the way HFW is set up for that process. Although honestly, I noticed some issues even when playing with heaphones using the 3D audio so idk.

As for ads being louder, well unfortunately I have no control over that. Games (and movies, TV) are usually mixed for high dynamic range, while ads are mixed for low dynamic range, so that means the dialogue in an ad is much closer to the peak volume than the dialogue in most normally mastered content. Basically, they want the ads to be loud. It's been such a problem that laws have been passed to try to fix this, but the ad companies find ways around it (and online ads probably don't have to follow those rules either) I do recommend Youtube premium though lol

I love doing the travel montages, although I actually had to modify one of them from my original edit because I didn't realize the game itself included a scene with the exact same music I chose, doing its own travel montage in a cutscene, lol, so I had to change the music and re-edit my scene.

Yes HFW has a quickswap, although I did have to trim frames when I used the weapon wheel in some circumstances (much like I did in the last movie)

I kept the starting armor, although I upgraded its level when I could.

The editing is so well done! I especially like the story dialogue over the travel sequences and I appreciate the in-game subtitles being off while having the option to use accurate YouTube captions.

@comfortablydumb8521

I don't think the subtitles are auto generated. He put game accurate subtitles manually in the video.

@eternallyrose

@@comfortablydumb8521 Absolutely, that’s what I was referring to. Currently YouTube captions are not that accurate.

@dondvj22

Great job on this. I especially like how you kept Aloy in her default outfit the whole way through, really keeping a consistent feel all the way through the watch.

@AndyGilleand

I know this is a pretty long video, so if you'd rather watch it cut up into episodes, I will also be releasing it as a 14 episode series in the coming weeks, so make sure you're subscribed if you're interested in that.

The episodes will be added to this playlist:

And if you like the movie, make sure to share it.

@fandy1000

will you be doing a god of war ragnarok movie ?

@AndyGilleand

@@fandy1000 yes it's one of the ideas planned. I'm running a poll right here:
