Armour Love
La Roux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You put on your armour
You put up defenses
What are you on to?
Cause I'm here to protect you
So take it easy
I make it so easy
You can lay your head down
And we'll leave it 'til tomorrow

You seem to believe you belong to somebody else
When you leave me alone in this world you know that I'm in hell
Do you know what it's like to be lonely and by yourself?

When your life is tangled
You wear your disguises
But what do you need to
When I'm standing here beside you
So take it easy
I make it so easy
You can lay your head down
And we'll leave it 'til tomorrow

You seem to believe you belong to somebody else
When you leave me alone in this world you know that I'm in hell
Do you know what it's like to be lonely and by yourself?

Slipping through my fingers
And inside another's
Tell me why won't you turn back?

You seem to believe you belong to somebody else
(You know what it's like, you shouldn't have to be told)
When you leave me alone in this world you know that I'm in hell

(It's not enough and you're running away)
Do you know what it's like to be lonely and by yourself? [repeat 2x]

Overall Meaning

The song "Armour Love" by La Roux is about the challenges of a relationship where one party is constantly putting up walls and defenses. The lyrics depict the frustration of being in a relationship with someone who believes they belong to somebody else and constantly wears disguises. The singer is trying to break through their partner's emotional barriers and assure them that they can let their guard down and trust her.

The opening lines of the song, "You put on your armour, you put up defenses, what are you on to? Cause I'm here to protect you," express the singer's desire to protect her partner and ease their worries. She wants to make the relationship work, but her partner's emotional detachment is making it difficult. The chorus repeats the line "Do you know what it's like to be lonely and by yourself?" and emphasizes the singer's sense of isolation in the relationship.

The second verse suggests that the person in the relationship with the emotional barriers is trying to move on and find solace in someone else. The singer implores her partner to "turn back" and give their relationship another chance. Ultimately, the song is about the difficulties of trying to connect with someone who is emotionally guarded and closed off.

She's a genius with her persona. She plays the part, dresses the part, and sings the part. It's like masterpiece of character... imperfections conjuring perfection.

These lyrics are what I've always wanted someone to say to me. Her lyrics are so personal, pop needs her.

great comment. thanks for that. most comments on La Roux are driving me crazy. she's a genius decimated to some kind of sex object for shallow lesbians. never seen so many distasteful comments about someone's appearance as on La Roux.

I loved La Roux growing up, before I’d had sex, before I’d known the irritable aching awful pain of ever being with someone. I used to listen to these songs and dream that I’d one day be in a relationship and experience all of this angst for myself...
Now I listen to them every now and then to remember the times when I hadn’t ever felt it. How it felt to not know. I’d love to feel that innocent ignorance again.

La Roux needs interesting comments like yours. people who actually love Elly Jackson for who she is and for what she does and not just for her sexuality and appearance.

Nostalgia. Heard this song for the first time two years ago, sophomore year. Now I'm a senior. God, this album is flawless.
