Now, there is one critic (Stephanie Bruzzese from Common Sense Media) who said it was a "less creative imitation of the classic tunes created by 1980s groups including Depeche Mode, Erasure, and The Human League", but take note of the word "imitation". Even Stephanie knew that it wasn't one of Depeche Mode's songs. In fact, the official song credits say it was written by Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid... in other words, La Roux wrote it.

Studies have been done that show we tend to like the types of music we were exposed to early in our development. Since music, like all culture, changes over time, that means when we get older, we will always immediately like new music less than old music. But if we can recognize we're doing that and let ourselves enjoy the music with an open mind, forgetting what "old music was like", we can appreciate the new stuff for its own merits.
