The group itself is composed of musicians Mourad Musset, Olivier Leite and Florent Vintrigner, all of them coming from the Théâtre du fil in Paris, France. At First, La Rue Kétanou was playing in the streets of la Rochelle and the île de Ré. The show was a mix between theater and music. Their motto was "C'est pas nous qui sommes à la rue, c'est la rue Kétanou", meaning "We don't belong to the street, the street belongs to us"
After spending some time living a semi bohemian life, the group ended up meeting Bibou, a member of Tryo, who asked them to be the opening act for the Tryo shows at L'Olympia and for the rest of their tour.
The first album of La Rue Kétanou, En attendant les caravanes (Waiting for the caravans) was finally produced in 2001. After some time doing tours throughout France, the group completed a second album Y'a des cigales dans la fourmilière (Cicadas in the ant-hill) in 2002. In 2004, they released a live album Ouvert à double tour. However, after this album, there were rumours that they were about to break up. Fortunately, these rumours ended up being untrue. Florent, however, spent some time in a related project, the group T'inquiète Lazare. Mourad and Olivier also formed a new band with several other musicians and friends, Mon côté punk.
After this pause, the group is touring again with two new members, Pierre Joseph and Simoné Monticelloni.

Refrain
Y’a du chahut au bout d’la rue
Des gars qui chantent la bienvenue
Mais c’est des gars qui rafistolent
Des chansons qui se rap’n’rollent
Ca alors qui aurait pu croire
Qu’avec un chapeau rempli d’espoir
Tu te retrouves jusqu’en Amérique
En troubadour des places publiques
Danse par dessus toutes les frontières
L’espace scénique grand comme la Terre
L’espace scénique grand comme la Terre
Refrain
The lyrics to La Rue Kétanou's song "Rap'N'Roll" talk about a group of guys who patch up songs that blend rap and rock music together. They encourage others to not hesitate to copy their hearts onto a small piece of paper, essentially expressing their emotions and thoughts through songwriting. The "joyful vandal" mentioned in the lyrics is someone who doesn't go hungry when he doesn't steal just his sandals. Instead, he puts "sagates" (possibly a play on words for "sagettes," which could mean a strong-willed stance) on his fingers and sings a piece of himself to everyone. The lyrics also mention becoming a tulip, a king of elephants, or even both. It implies that through their music, they can transform into different characters and explore various aspects of life.
The chorus reinforces the fusion of rap and rock in their music, highlighting that it's the guys who are patching up this unique combination. They take pride in their craft and present it as their signature style. The second verse suggests that mistakes are meant to be made to move forward. It emphasizes the importance of dreaming and not necessarily requiring sleep to imagine a world in which one can afford to travel in the opposite direction of the norm. They encourage the guys to let loose, infuse their ideas with swing, even if they are not skilled dancers. The lyrics also suggest the fear of ridicule should be disregarded because sometimes not daring enough can lead to setbacks.
The final verse talks about noise and commotion at the end of the street, where guys are singing a welcome. These men are the ones patching up songs that blend rap and rock genres. The lyrics express surprise that someone with a hopeful hat could find themselves in America as a troubadour of public spaces. It symbolizes the idea of transcending boundaries and dancing over borders. The stage becomes as vast as the Earth itself, providing the opportunity to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
