The concept was created by musician and trumpeter Colorado Tabasco Carlos Vera. Currently only three of original members are part of the Internacional Sonora Santanera, Don Sergio Celada (founding member), Don Arturo Ortiz and Antonio Toño Mendez.
Fue precisamente cuando se dirigían a cumplir una presentación en Aguascalientes dentro del programa de la Feria de San Marcos el 25 de abril de 1986. Cerca de la colonia Ex-Hacienda de Lechería, en Tultitlán, Estado de México, en el kilómetro 30 de la carretera México-Querétaro que el autobús del conjunto fue impactado por el vagón de un tráiler, provocando una aparatosa volcadura, dentro del autobús pereció de manera instantánea Carlos, debido a diversos politraumatismos craneales que había sufrido, otros integrantes como Juan y Silvestre también habían resultado heridos, el resto de la agrupación había resultado ilesa con heridas menores, no obstante la herida psicológica debida a la pérdida de Carlos no sanó completamente. El conjunto había perdido al corazón y artífice de su éxito.
En años posteriores los integrantes recibieron la anuencia de la señora Yolanda Almazán Ortíz viuda de Colorado para continuar con el proyecto de Carlos, con Silvestre Mercado como nuevo líder de la agrupación, por lo que logran en los años siguientes colocar diversos temas en la radio mexicana y continuar vigentes a través de actuaciones en los medios masivos y en giras y presentaciones al interior de la República, no obstante con el paso del tiempo el desacuerdo con la viuda de Colorado se hizo patente y fue necesario cambiar el nombre a la agruapación como la "Única Internacional Sonora Santanera".
