Mar de fondo
La Trampa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mar de fondo en nuestro corazón,
los demonios bailan sobre el
temporal.
Mar de fondo en nuestro corazón,
se descuelgan flores sobre la
ciudad

Y en cada barra y en cada bar
un vaso zarpa y se hace a la mar.
Y un vaso vuelve sin capitán
y apenas llega quiere zarpar.

Y ve perderse a Montevideo,
va navegando y siente el mareo.

Lejos del puerto y de la ciudad
las luces mueren y el alma va.

Overall Meaning

In "Mar de fondo," La Trampa invites its listeners to embark on an introspective journey toward the depths of the self. The ocean serves as a metaphor for the emotional turbulence that we all experience at some point in our lives. As the title suggests, a "mar de fondo" or groundswell is a type of wave that occurs deep within the ocean and, unlike regular waves, does not crest or break. Rather, it moves like a massive wall of water, slowly and constantly, and can be deceptive and dangerous to ships.

The first verse describes the tumultuous emotions that can take over our hearts, like demons dancing in a storm. The second presents a contrasting image of beauty and fragility as flowers cascade over the city, perhaps as a symbol of hope or rebirth. The chorus tackles the theme of escape and how we sometimes try to numb or outrun our pain through alcohol or other means. The contrast between the sailing vessels and their voyages highlights the unpredictability of the journey and the fact that sometimes we may return to where we started, wounded and without direction.

The final verse takes the listener on a physical journey as the ship sails away from the port and toward the horizon. The lights of the city fade away, and the singer is left alone with their thoughts and the vastness of the sea. Here, the ocean serves as a mirror for the soul, reflecting back our vulnerabilities, fears, and desires.

Overall, "Mar de fondo" is a song about the complexities of the human condition, about how we navigate our inner storms, and how we find meaning and purpose in the midst of uncertainty.
