Its founders were Sebastián Teysera (lead vocals, frontman and main songwriter), Nicolás Lieutier (bass guitar) and Santiago Butler (guitar) - all three are still part of the band today. The band's first appearance as La Vela Puerca was in a montevidean street party in December 24, 1995. By then, several new members had already joined in. In 1996, frontman Sebastián Teysera presented a demo tape to a band contest. The rest of the band did not become aware of this until they found out they were one of the twenty finalists. A month later, they recieved a phone call saying they had won, and with this they were given 80 hours of free recording session which would be vital for their debut album.
La Vela Puerca released four albums: Deskarado (1998)(1999 released in Europe as "La Vela Puerca"), De Bichos Y Flores (2001), A Contraluz (2004)and El Impulso (2007).
In Germany they're well-known since they've played with Die Ärzte in Germany and Uruguay. In 2006 they're touring again in Europe.

De tal suerte, barranquilla
Ta' llorando, ta' que arde
Ta' diciendo, puta madre
Tata mío que no me deja respirar
Igual aprendo solo
Chato, mato si, pa' comer y pa' zafar
No te sientas, maravilla
De tal palo, tal astilla
Pasa macho, hijo 'e tigre
Mala pata, pero libre
Cuál mi bandera
La linda o la fea
Cuál es amigo
Cuál es contigo
Cuál es hermano
Sos un fulano
No me grites, no me jodas
No me gustan ya tus bromas
Ta' de fiesta, ta' clavado
Ta' escapando, ta' pirado
Tata mío que no me deja respirar
Igual aprendo solo
Chato mato si, pa' comer y pa' zafar
Paco, fino y rolo
No te metas, con la gente
Que esta' toda de la mente
Que son todos, clandestinos
Que esta' lleno de asesinos
The opening phrase “De tal Palo, tal Astilla” is an old Spanish proverb which means “like father like son” or more generally “children tend to inherit the characteristics and tendencies of their parents.” Similarly, “De tal suerte, barranquilla” suggests that the son’s destiny is already predetermined, just like the city of Barranquilla in Colombia. The phrase “Ta’ llorando, ta’ que arde” describes the son’s distressing emotional state, while “Ta’ diciendo, puta madre” conveys his frustration and anger, possibly directed towards his father or possibly himself.
The lyrics present a complex relationship between a father and a son, where the son is struggling to live up to the expectations set by his father. The father figure (“Tata”) is presented as overbearing and suffocating, not allowing his son to breathe or develop his own identity. However, the son (“Igual aprendo solo”) is determined to learn and grow independently, even if it means making mistakes along the way. The names in the lines “Chato, mato si, pa' comer y pa' zafar/Paco, fino y rolo” are slang for different types of people in Uruguayan society, possibly implying that the son is trying to find his place in the world.
As the song progresses, the son expresses his confusion about his identity and relationships. The lines “Cuál mi bandera/La linda o la fea” suggest that he’s unsure which side to take in a particular conflict or debate. The questions “Cuál es amigo/Cuál es contigo/Cuál es hermano/Sos un fulano” express his frustration with the people around him, who he feels aren’t trustworthy or loyal. The final verse paints a picture of a dangerous and unpredictable world, full of “clandestinos” and “asesinos,” where the son is trying to find his way without getting involved in any trouble.
