Its founders were Sebastián Teysera (lead vocals, frontman and main songwriter), Nicolás Lieutier (bass guitar) and Santiago Butler (guitar) - all three are still part of the band today. The band's first appearance as La Vela Puerca was in a montevidean street party in December 24, 1995. By then, several new members had already joined in. In 1996, frontman Sebastián Teysera presented a demo tape to a band contest. The rest of the band did not become aware of this until they found out they were one of the twenty finalists. A month later, they recieved a phone call saying they had won, and with this they were given 80 hours of free recording session which would be vital for their debut album.
La Vela Puerca released four albums: Deskarado (1998)(1999 released in Europe as "La Vela Puerca"), De Bichos Y Flores (2001), A Contraluz (2004)and El Impulso (2007).
In Germany they're well-known since they've played with Die Ärzte in Germany and Uruguay. In 2006 they're touring again in Europe.

Si se apaga dale luz
Por tirano se merece
Que lo cuelguen en la cruz
Suenan tiro en La Habana
Pero es mejor no correr
Si te arrancan los carteles
No más corrupción en la tierra
No más tiranía en el cielo
No más matanza de colores
No más intereses ajenos
Los pueblos de alma viril
Saltan sangrientas etapas
Se reincorporan en Chiapas
Los mártires del Brasil
Las fieras a su cubil
Los hombres hacia la aurora
La legión libertadora
No se rinde ni se aplasta
Y cuando se grita ¡basta!
Inaplazable es la hora
Venden vida descartable
para el nabo que esta ahí
que seguro se la compra
pa´ decir que estuvo aquí
Vayan sudando la gota
Porque viene, a lo mejor,
Vayan pelando las sedas
Que La Vela ya llegó
"El Ojo Moro" by La Vela Puerca is a political song with a call for action against tyranny and oppression. The song starts with an invocation to "the Moorish Eye," a symbol of resistance and rebellion. The singer urges to keep this symbol alive and bright, and if it fades, to light it up again. Then, the song warns about the danger of running away from a problem, using the example of Havana, where gunshots are heard, but running is not the solution. The song continues with a call for an end to corruption and tyranny on Earth and Heaven, a halt to the slaughter of different colors, and the cessation of foreign interests. The song then praises the resilience of strong-willed communities that endure bloody phases and keep moving forward, citing examples from Chiapas, Brazil, and other places. The song concludes with a bold message to the "sellers of disposable life" and the elite who watch people suffer from a safe distance, warning them that La Vela Puerca (the band's name) is coming for them.
