Its founders were Sebastián Teysera (lead vocals, frontman and main songwriter), Nicolás Lieutier (bass guitar) and Santiago Butler (guitar) - all three are still part of the band today. The band's first appearance as La Vela Puerca was in a montevidean street party in December 24, 1995. By then, several new members had already joined in. In 1996, frontman Sebastián Teysera presented a demo tape to a band contest. The rest of the band did not become aware of this until they found out they were one of the twenty finalists. A month later, they recieved a phone call saying they had won, and with this they were given 80 hours of free recording session which would be vital for their debut album.
La Vela Puerca released four albums: Deskarado (1998)(1999 released in Europe as "La Vela Puerca"), De Bichos Y Flores (2001), A Contraluz (2004)and El Impulso (2007).
In Germany they're well-known since they've played with Die Ärzte in Germany and Uruguay. In 2006 they're touring again in Europe.

Madre resistencia
Pa' poder comer
Madre resistencia
Pa' poder mirar
Madre resistencia
The lyrics to La Vela Puerca's song Madre Resistencia are a call to resistance against the forces of capitalism and poverty. The song begins by addressing Mother Resistance, personified as a figure that provides sustenance, vision, and catharsis for those struggling against these forces. The repeated refrain of "Madre resistencia" serves as both an invocation of this power and a reminder of its necessity.
The lyrics then turn to a call to action, urging the listener to fight against poverty and the seductive pull of capitalism. The image of rivers flowing down from the mountains with hands full of stones suggests a willingness to fight with all available means against the unjust systems that have led to so much hardship.
The second verse expands on this theme, suggesting that resistance is necessary not just for survival, but also for living, returning, and suffering. The song then takes a more celebratory turn, suggesting that even in the midst of struggle, there is room for dance and joy, as long as one remains vigilant against the forces that threaten to undermine resistance.
Overall, the lyrics of Madre Resistencia represent a passionate call to action that emphasizes the importance of solidarity, resistance, and hope in the face of great adversity.
