I don't want you, but I'd hate to lose you
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
I forgive you, 'cause I can't forget you
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea

[Repeat: x2]
I ought to cross you off my list
But when you come a-knocking at my door
Fate seems to give my heart a twist
And I come running back for more
I should hate you, but I guess I love you
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea

You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
The devil and the deep blue sea

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eddy Duchin's "Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" describe the singer's inner turmoil over a romantic relationship. On one hand, they don't want to be with the person anymore, but on the other, they can't seem to let go. The metaphor of being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea emphasizes the feeling of being stuck in a difficult situation with no clear way out. The idea of fate playing a role in the singer's return to the relationship adds a sense of inevitability to the situation, as if there's no escaping it.

The lyrics also touch on the theme of forgiveness vs. forgetting. The singer says they forgive the person for whatever they did wrong, but they can't forget and move on. This internal conflict is another example of the emotional complexity at play in the song.

Overall, "Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" is a song about the difficulties of navigating love and relationships, and the internal conflicts that can arise when we're torn between our desires and what we know is right.

I own a Ukulele just because of George. Thanks for the influence, George.

George's biggest mentor was, of course, George Formby. Pity they couldn't have played together

@BenZaniline

That's as much a ukulele as George Formby's ukulele - i.e. not a ukulele...

@epipick

@David Didn't Formby play the banjolele?

Every time I watch and hear George, I miss him all the more. I had a chance meeting with him at a hotel in Los Angeles. Waiting for an elevator after checking in, I was carrying two suitcases. The door open and as is normal for me, I wait for everyone to depart before I get in. Suddenly there he was... holding a uke in one hand and a light bag in the other. He said, “checking in?” I replied “ yes,” and he said, “nice hotel, this one.” Then he left. I think Olivia and Dani were with him but I don’t really remember. Crazy.

He was so down to earth which is one of the many reasons he’s my favourite Beatle.
