Enjoy The Silence
Lacuna Coil Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh, my little girl

[Chorus]
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here
In my arms
Words are very
Unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

[Chorus: x3]

Enjoy the silence [Repeat: x4]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lacuna Coil's song Enjoy the Silence seem to talk about how the main speaker finds it difficult to communicate effectively with others. The opening lines, "Words like violence / Break the silence / Come crashing in / Into my little world" suggest that the singer is overwhelmed by the forceful words of others, as if they are violent and intrusive. The next line, "Painful to me / Pierce right through me," indicates that these words might even cause the singer physical pain.

The chorus, "All I ever wanted / All I ever needed / Is here / In my arms / Words are very / Unnecessary / They can only do harm," suggests that the singer may be looking for comfort and connection, but doesn't believe that words are the means to achieve it. Rather, the singer finds solace in physical touch ("In my arms"), and believes that words only cause trouble and hurt.

The second verse, "Vows are spoken / To be broken / Feelings are intense / Words are trivial / Pleasures remain / So does the pain / Words are meaningless / And forgettable," takes an even more cynical view of language. The singer suggests that language is ultimately useless - vows are destined to fail, feelings are too powerful to be accurately expressed in words ("Words are trivial"), and even pleasurable experiences ("Pleasures remain") are always accompanied by pain ("So does the pain"). The final line of the song, "Enjoy the silence," suggests that the singer has given up on language altogether and is content to simply be still and quiet.
