She is known for her image reinventions and musical versatility. Gaga began performing as a teenager, singing at open mic nights and acting in school plays. She studied at Collaborative Arts Project 21, through the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, before dropping out to pursue a career in music. After Def Jam Recordings canceled her contract, she worked as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, where she signed a joint deal with Interscope Records and KonLive Distribution, in 2007. Gaga had her breakthrough the following year with her debut studio album, The Fame, and its chart-topping singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". The album was later reissued to include the EP The Fame Monster (2009), which yielded the successful singles "Bad Romance", "Telephone" and "Alejandro".

Gaga's five succeeding studio albums all debuted atop the US Billboard 200. Her second full-length album, Born This Way (2011), explored electronic rock and techno-pop and sold more than one million copies in its first week. @Daniel Antongiorgi they had multiple layers. They add at least a high octave and a maybe a low but turned down the volume. Yes they add a lot if reverb. I found this video in search of her unengineered vocals. Not what i was looking for but definitely not disappointed.

OF COURSE this has pitch correction! The voice has to be smooth and even, they have to prevent the singer from going sharp, flat, etc. EVERY pop song it's made like that.
But this chick has proven that she is a very competent vocalist and a versatile one too, maybe one of the best in pop music right now. Don't try to take away her merit.

For those who don't understand how auto tune works, listen to 3:43 on to the chorus. Notice that when she is hitting the lowest notes in the melody that it's slightly lower than her register. You can clearly hear the autotuing correcting her pitch, even as she is working back up the scale because of the strain. It's not rocket science, nor is it a cut to Gaga. We all have singing limitations because we're human. The production process also helps cover up some of the human error as well (vocal doubling, phase distorting, etc).

However, her harmonies are absolutely ridiculous on the chorus lines. They are sublime and are the best part of this demonstration imo.

her first album was SOAKED in autotune, but i guess now she has more control over her own work, and she doesn't use it that much anymore. she still uses it though. this has pitch correction written all over it, whether you agree with that or not is meaningless.

Yes, honey...you won't find a pop song (or most any song designed for broadcast) these days without Autotune--excessive or subtle. I've recorded people with phenomenal voices but have had to use the software to make it "fit" and get rid of the artifacts of natural singing because of the style of the song itself. It's not shameful to use Autotune if you sing in tune in your live performances. In this case, it's part of the style of the song to use it excessively. Think before you judge.

did i ever say she isn't? what i'm trying to say is that back then her producers probably didn't realise she was different from britney, miley etc. and ran her vocals through the standard filters and effects of the moment. so i guess she isn't so producer-dependent anymore or at least the producers get her now. i do think she's a fantastic singer.
