Aura
Lady Gaga Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I killed my former and
Left her in the trunk on highway ten
Put the knife under the hood
If you find it, send it straight to Hollywood

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Aura-a-a-a aura-a-a-a
Aura-a-a-a aura-a-a-a
Aura-a-a-a aura-a-a-a

I'm not a wandering slave I am a woman of choice
My veil is protection for the gorgeousness of my face
You ought to pity me 'cause was always one man to love
But in the bedroom the size of him's more than enough

Do you wanna see me naked, lover?
Do you wanna peek underneath the cover?
Do you wanna see the girl who lives behind the aura, behind the aura?
Do you wanna touch me, cosmic lover?
Do you wanna peek underneath the cover?
Do you wanna see the girl who lives behind the aura?
Behind the aura, behind the aura, behind the aura?

Enigma pop star is fun, she wear burqa for fashion
It's not a statement as much as just a move of passion
I may not walk on your street or shoot a gun on your soil
I hear you screaming, is it because of pleasure or toil?

Dance, sex, art, pop, tech
Dance, sex, art, pop, tech

Do you wanna see me naked, lover?
Do you wanna peek underneath the cover?
Do you wanna see the girl who lives behind the aura, behind the aura?
Do you wanna touch me, cosmic lover?
Do you wanna peek underneath the cover?
Do you wanna see the girl who lives behind the aura?
Behind the aura, behind the curtain, behind the burga

Overall Meaning

The song "Aura" by Lady Gaga is an expression of her identity as an artist and a woman. She opens the song by describing her former self, which she has killed and left in the trunk on Highway 10. It is unclear if this is a metaphorical death or a literal one, but it shows that Gaga is shedding her old self and embracing a new identity. She even encourages the person who finds the knife she used to send it to Hollywood, a place that represents the pinnacle of fame and success.

The chorus of the song is a repetition of the word "Aura" which represents Gaga's new identity. She is not a "wandering slave" but a woman of choice who uses a veil as protection for the "gorgeousness" of her face. She challenges the listener to see beyond her veil and into the person she is inside, the "girl who lives behind the aura." She is comfortable with her sexuality and asks her lover if they want to see her naked or touch her, but she is also deep and complex, grappling with questions about pleasure and toil.

The song concludes with Gaga declaring that she is an "enigma pop star" who wears a burqa for fashion. This is a nod to her interest in the Middle East and her use of cultural appropriation in her music and fashion choices. She ends the song by repeating the chorus and adding "behind the curtain" as a final challenge to her audience to see beyond the surface and into the depths of her artistry.

Kill The Bitch

I love this song it's so fun and complex and different. That makes it special .
Should've been the first single in my opinion

Tulito Garcia

Gaga wanted it to be the first single but her record label insisted on Applause.

DCgamer

I don’t think it should’ve been the first single, cause Applause REALLY makes an amazing first single, but I think it really needed to be a second single! I also think the same way with Venus! That song REALLY needed to be a single as well 😂

Rave Music Charts

It didn’t have to be the lead to continue. It literally could’ve been just the lyric video but no -_-
Also in my opinion Applause was the better choice. Replace Venus with Do What U Want, keep G.U.Y, then release Aura and not Gypsy. Also Donatella

Sawlfo

Its originaly a track from infected mushroom called kink, but gaga purchase it before it was realease and added the lyrics! Thats why its so diferent, they are a psytrance band
