Wish You Were Here
Lady Gaga Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's funny how things they change
The clouds they part, rearrange - for me
Faces of strangers and I have no familiars to help me see

Where is home?
I want you to know
That I wish you were here
I wish you were here

Sometimes I wonder
If God hides out in cities to set us free
'Cause yeah, this room is crowded but I'm so alone
And it help me please

Where is home?
I want you to know
That I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here

And I will be strong
I won't give in
I won't deny you
I know where we've been
I was so much more
Then all of my fears
Then all of these tears, my tears (yeah)

I wish you were here
I wish you were here

Where is home?
I want you to know (oh yeah)
I wish you were here

I wish you were here
I wish you were here

Overall Meaning

In "Wish You Were Here," Lady Gaga expresses her feelings of loneliness and displacement while on tour. She starts off reflecting on the ever-changing nature of her surroundings and how it affects her sense of familiarity. She feels like a stranger in a sea of unfamiliar faces and wonders where home is. She desires the comfort and sanctuary of home and wishes for the presence of someone who understands her and makes her feel safe. She's wrestling with feeling alone and disconnected from everything and everyone she knows. Gaga then muses about the possibility of God being present in the city and the room she is in to free her from her loneliness. She feels so alone, despite being surrounded by crowds of people. The song expresses Gaga's longing for home and the comfort of people she loves, no matter where she is.

The chorus of the song is a plea for the person she desires to be with to come and be with her. The repetition of the phrase "I wish you were here" reflects the depths of her loneliness and desperation for a connection. In the second half of the song, Gaga resolves to remain strong and not give up, even though she's facing her fears and shedding tears. She knows that whoever she's talking to has been with her through everything and has been a comforting presence throughout her journey.
