Maybe It's Time
Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe it's time to let the old ways die
Maybe it's time to let the old ways die
It takes a lot to change a man
Hell, it takes a lot to try
Maybe it's time to let the old ways die

Nobody knows what waits for the dead
Nobody knows what waits for the dead
Some folks just believe in the things they've heard
And the things they read
Nobody knows what awaits for the dead

I'm glad I can't go back to where I came from
I'm glad those days are gone, gone for good
But if I could take spirits from my past and bring' 'em here
You know I would, you know I would

Nobody speaks to God these days
Nobody speaks to God these days
I'd like to think he's looking down and laughing at our ways
Nobody speaks to God these days

When I was a child they tried to fool me
Said the worldly man was lost and that hell was real
Well, I've seen hell in Reno
And this world's one big ol' Catherine wheel
Spinnin' still

Maybe it's time to let the old ways die
Maybe it's time to let the old ways die
It takes a lot to change your plans
And a train to change your mind

Maybe it's time to let the old ways die
Oh, maybe it's time to let the old ways die

Overall Meaning

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's song, "Maybe It's Time," is a reflective and introspective piece that points to the need for change and letting go of past traditions and ways of life. The first verse repeats the phrase "Maybe it's time to let the old ways die" twice, emphasizing the need for a transformative shift. The lyrics suggest that changing oneself is not a simple process but takes immense courage and significant effort to undertake. The songs raise questions about the future and uncertainties that lie ahead after the abandonment of the old ways. The second verse states that nobody knows what awaits the dead, highlighting the unknown and uncertain nature of the future. In this sense, the lyrics encourage the listener to consider the present and live in the moment fully.

The song's chorus offers a bittersweet reflection on the past, highlighting its ups and downs and how it has shaped who the singer has become. The line, "I'm glad I can't go back to where I came from" expresses gratitude for leaving the past behind but is tempered by the idea of delving into it to bring back certain memories that define who they are. Contrasting the first and second verse, the repeated line in the chorus, "Maybe it's time to let the old ways die," is softened with the addition of the line, "It takes a lot to change your plans and train to change your mind." The shift in the last line from the first and second verse denotes the acknowledgment of the difficulties of moving forward and the transformative process it requires.

The bridge of the song suggests a disillusionment with religion that represents another old way of life. The line "Nobody speaks to God these days" implies the absence of the divine in the present times. Yet, the next line offers hope, suggesting that despite this void, there is still an opportunity for joy in life. The final verse famously references the idea of the "Catherine wheel," a medieval instrument of torture that symbolizes the cycle of suffering and rebirth. This final verse emphasizes the need for progress and the difficulty of doing so while highlighting the ever-evolving nature of the world.

Talvez Seja a Hora

Bradley has some pipes! I never knew he could sing so well, I'm blown away

@antonycapewell3625

ScarlettP he train his vocals for 18 months before doing this movie talk on the Ellen daytime show about it , completely shows if you put effort into something it pays off

@claverhouse1

The vocal training was to allow him to pitch his voice an octave lower than normal, not in how to sing.

@lauraishmael2635

He spent 18 months learning to sing and learning how to play the guitar. And also worked with a voice coach for singing AND to drop his range down an octave. His real speaking voice is much more in the tenor range rather than baritone/bass.
