Vena Cava
Lady Lamb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The vena cava
The most superior
The queen
Bringing blood into the chamber
Always into the chamber
And in you it moves the same
Even if you can not feel how it moves, it does move there in you
I'm Awake but I cannot be found
Daydreaming so far down
In your arms I sleep so deeply but I can feel how you will leave me
Even as you are still sitting here
Even as your mug of coffee steams
I can feel how the seams of your ribs
Will separate from the seams of my ribs
I know already how much TV will fail to comfort me in your absence
It's as though the nothing never was
As everything will do just what it does
Like a bullet in the barrel of a gun
I'm hiding here inside for someone, someone
in your eyes streaks of canary yellow
In that twin bed I lay straight and narrow
In your room on Long Island
I tried to keep myself from sighing
While the lilt of your language
it made me think that I was sinking with the wreckage
of that old ship
even though our love has long been dead
its ghosts will follow to the foot of my deathbed
I ain't no brother I ain't no son
There ain't no Aubergine in my blood
I ain't no warrior or king
But how I am one when I sing
When I sing sing sing

While the vena cava the most superior the queen
is bringing blood into the chamber always into your chamber

Overall Meaning

The song "Vena Cava" by Lady Lamb discusses themes of love and loss. The lyrics use metaphorical language to describe the singer's emotional state and physical reactions to the end of a relationship. The vena cava, the vein that brings blood into the heart, is used as an extended metaphor for love, as it is described as the queen and always entering the chamber. The line "And in you it moves the same / Even if you can not feel how it moves, it does move there in you" implies that love exists even if it is not felt or acknowledged by the other person.

The second verse finds the singer daydreaming and sleeping deeply in the arms of their lover, yet still feeling the impending loss. They can feel the separation of their ribs and the other person's ribs, symbolizing the emotional distance between them. The line "I know already how much TV will fail to comfort me in your absence" shows how the singer is aware of their future loneliness and how trivial comforts will be unable to alleviate their pain.

In the third verse, the singer remembers their lover's room on Long Island and the sinking feeling they experienced when listening to their language. They recognize that the ghosts of their lost love will follow them to the end of their life. The final lines of the song connect back to the vena cava metaphor, emphasizing how love will continue to enter the chambers of the heart.

Overall, "Vena Cava" is a haunting and poetic depiction of how love can impact us even after it is gone.

I like this song of Aly very much! It has so much dynamics and sometimes it is easy and other times full of energy. You don't see that so much with other songs. I have listen a lot to Aly her album After in the last two years and in 2015 It was for me the best album of that year together with I declare nothing of Tess Parks. In 2016 it was also in my top 10 of that year. I have experienced so many positive emotions because of listen to Aly her music! Thanks for putting this album on youtube!
I have listen a lot to it the month before I saw her live in September 2015. Almost everyday during meditation. I listen to the
whole album. Because of that I enjoyed her concert more and I really could hear her lyrics very good. At the show I bought her two albums on cd and she was so kind to sign them:). That was really nice of her!
