Soft Power
Ladytron Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Broken glass is luxury;
Friendly fires are alchemy;
Daylight is the enemy;
Witching hour, soft power

We're not sleeping at the wheel.
The wheel is turning the machine
That kills for us.

Close your eyes, so you're not seen
In Valentine's daydream.

We're not sleeping at the wheel
The wheel is turning the machine
That kills for us.

The hourglass of the forests
Setting fire to the tourists

We're not sleeping at the wheel
The wheel is turning the machine
That kills for us.

Broken glass is luxury;
Friendly fires are alchemy;

Daylight is the enemy;
Witching hour, soft power.

Overall Meaning

In "Soft Power" by Ladytron, the lyrics describe a sense of detachment and dissociation in our current state of society. Broken glass is considered a luxury, suggesting a disinterest in the environment and disregard for the consequences of our actions. Similarly, friendly fires are seen as alchemy, implying that destruction is not only accepted but celebrated.

The chorus seems to imply a greater force at play, with the wheel representing the larger societal mechanisms that allow for this destruction to occur. The line "we're not sleeping at the wheel" suggests an awareness of this system and participation in it, rather than simply being passive observers. The use of Valentine's Day as a symbol adds to this sentiment, implying that love and romance have become increasingly performative and disconnected from genuine emotion.

The final verse brings attention to the destruction of forests and the harm caused to tourists, again emphasizing a disregard for the environment and the consequences of our actions. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the cyclical nature of this detachment and destruction, with the "soft power" of society continuing to perpetuate these actions.

Line by Line Meaning

Broken glass is luxury;
Luxury is often associated with perfection, where everything must be clean and pristine. However, here, the broken glass is becoming a symbol of luxury, where everything does not have to be perfect, and imperfection itself can be prized as luxurious and unique.

Friendly fires are alchemy;
The phrase 'Friendly Fires' is being used here to describe a controlled fire that is useful or initiated without any harmful intentions. The line is stating that this phenomenon is an alchemic process where something is transformed like a magical ritual to create something new and useful.

Daylight is the enemy;
The line is using 'daylight' as a metaphor for societal norms that impact people's lives. It denotes that norms are destructive and oppressive, obstructing individuality and personal freedom.

Witching hour, soft power
This line refers to a time when the veil between life and death is the thinnest, and the supernatural becomes more accessible. Soft power might mean a subtle persuasive force or a connection to this supernatural force.

We're not sleeping at the wheel.
The artist is asserting that they are aware and actively engaged in their surroundings, not ignorant or apathetic towards the decisions they make or the impacts of their actions.

The wheel is turning the machine That kills for us.
The machine being spoken of here is the machine of society that gives people opportunities and benefits, but with a cost. The price being paid is the cost of destroying the environment and harming people globally, and that cost is being paid by everyone who is oblivious to it.

Close your eyes, so you're not seen In Valentine's daydream.
This line is about the culture of Valentine's day, which is focused on buying things like gifts and dates. People indulge in these things, so they're not seen for who they indeed are, living in a fantasy that Valentine's day sells.

The hourglass of the forests Setting fire to the tourists
The hourglass here means a symbol of passing time where the forests, in this instance, have only a finite amount of time remaining. The forests described are being destroyed by people who are tourists to the area, and their actions are setting it ablaze.

What an annoying comment.
Let me guess, you like to flaunt your "mid-European" (whatever that means) part because being a northerner is "stale and pale"?

I've seen a Norwegian girl almost reduced to tears when her 23andMe came back 0%sub-Saharan African, 0% middle-eastern.

She thought that being a member of the rarest racial group is "boring."

95% of the planet is black haired and dark skinned. But you want to join them to feel more diverse?

Lol. The J men have won.

@forestdenizen6497

Well the major organ of "American" soft power is Hollywood.
And those people not only consider what they do to be something of a dark art, but are often practicing occultists.

Look at the newest releases from Ladytron, the mask has dropped, their political leanings now overt, churning out pro-mass-immigration and transhumanist agitprop.

I guess we should have seen it coming.
I guess we should not have ignored the blatant satanism/illuminism in their imagery.

And how exactly did they meet? TAVISTOCK institute?

Let us not forget the lyric "stateless Jews, lay down beside me", an open declaration of fealty.

And Mira is, of course, a member of the Tribe who hates (her?) host nation.

Sad. Very sad.
I would say "why could they not just stay apolitical"? But of course, the piper must be paid one way or another.

Fun fact: Ladytron's album, Witching Hour was a major influence for Depeche Mode's 2009 album, "Sounds of the Universe".

@JasmineSurrealVideos

Aaron Hyde Really? Some of the Modes songs are ok like Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence but for me they don't come close to the majesty of Ladytron. Interesting though they were influenced, shows that older bands can pick up stuff from newer bands with a different sound and vision.
