I understand how the music industry works. I discovered this song living in New York sometime in 2007 when Pandora was new. This song came on and I fucking loved it beyond words. I was already a huge Kylie fan and when her X album came out and her version came on I almost drove my car off the road.
Kylie’s version is wonderful and amazing and this song is a perfect snapshot of what songs can be and where they came from. I truly love both versions and yes for sure the Kylie version is more streamlined and fine tuned and geared toward a broader audience (not to mention it should have been a worldwide fucking dance smash) but at the end of the day, 13 years later, this version just does it for me.
Kylie’s version is like the main event dance club and this original demo is like the lounge upscale pregame bar. There’s a place for them both, and they’re both dear to my heart. Back in 2007 I couldn’t find any way to get this song off Pandora but I found it credited as “I’m the one” with the band being titled as “Laid” (wtf lol) and it was on a 3 disc dance compilation CD thing I procured at the virgin records in Times Square.
