Sugar Daddy
Laika Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sugar daddy
Take me away from this bad bad place
I'm sick and tired of trying
And I wanna fly away
I guess we got our wires crossed
He's thinking driftwood
I think twigs nothing
Nothing's gonna save us now
And I wanna fly away

Overall Meaning

In Laika's song Sugar Daddy, the lyrics depict a sense of feeling stuck and exhausted with one's current situation. The singer is looking for an escape from the bad place they are currently in, and they are tired of trying to find a way out. The use of the phrase "sugar daddy" implies a desire for someone to rescue them from their situation, whether it be in the form of financial help or emotional support.

The chorus signifies a miscommunication with the person they thought could help them, as they realize that they are not on the same page. The use of the metaphor "driftwood" versus "twigs" implies a difference in perspective or understanding between the two parties. The singer ultimately acknowledges that nothing will save them now, and they just want to fly away from their current reality.

Overall, the song explores the theme of feeling trapped and seeking a way out. The use of metaphorical language adds depth to the lyrics and highlights the disconnect between the singer and the person they hoped to find comfort in.

I love Laika! Something about their music... trippy, surreal, and always invokes a calming effect. It's my escape. Whenever I listen to them, it makes me think of that soft bluish light that filters in through sheer window curtains and into your bedroom at 5:00 in the morning: You want it to last, it mesmerizes you, and later on you're not sure if it was real or you dreamed it.

I had an unforgettable weekend in my 20's with a girl I met while my band was playing in NYC. That night, she played Laika and the Cosmonauts, and when I went back to Atlanta, I bought Laika by mistake. I couldn't stop listening to it, and this takes me back to 1996 hearing it.

Still holds up!

Been listening to Laika since '93. They played a small tour in Canada and my buddy's band was fortunate enough to open for them. I was fortunate enough to get a three song CD which included Lower Than The Stars. Glad I stumbled across the comment section, I feel like I have so much more to learn about Too Pure artists.

I've always loved The Orb and Little Fluffy Clouds and I can see how one would find a connection, but Laika, man, Laika is the shit!

Yeah, and I have always liked Laika. But in this case, and mind you i have only heard the first song thus far, but that "Something about their music..." that you say is "trippy, surreal" and ".....calming" , comes from the band THE ORB. Check them out if you haven't. You won't have the ego of Laika's vocalists to identify with (which is harmonically nice, and tonally, and Lyrically sound as well) but if there was a source for the beauty which is the "post-live ambient sound" (by post-live i mean mostly sequenced, and sampled music; though i did see the ORB live with several members playing and it was the most multi-sensory, awesome show I've ever seen) as what you hear being so sublimely, and beautfully rendered here by Laika, and their HEAVY INFLUENCES, then it is they whom I have mentioned along with the original ambient master workers and their works, such as perhaps throw some Brian Eno in there, a little bit of, I DUNNO, Philip Glass MAYBE ! !, or my personal favorite, Weather Report's album Mysterious Traveller, and yeah Miles Davis' '58 sessions, or hell even Buddy Rich's version of Duke Ellington's Caravan, or if you would like to get WAY back to the ORIGINAL ORIGINAL ambient masters, Claude Debussy ( the god OF AMBIENT MUSIC ), or maybe Erik Satie, and perhaps even before those two, God knows there were others! but I'm sorry I digress. Let me revert to point; go get yo arse a taste of some "LITTLE FLUFFLY..." FREAKIN "....CLOUDS" would ya??!?!?!?
