JEALOUSY
Laine Frankie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jealousy, night and day you torture me
I sometimes wonder
If this spell that I'm under
Can only be a melody
For I know no one but me has won your heart, but
When the music starts, my peace departs

From the moment they play that lovely strain
And we surrender to all its charm again
This jealousy that tortures me is ecstasy, mystery, pain

We dance to a tango of love
Your heart beats with mine as we sway
Your eyes give the answer I'm dreaming of
That soft word your cruel lips will never say

I fear that the music will end
And shatter the spell it may lend
To make me believe when your eyes just deceive
But it's only the tango you love

I fear that the music will end
And shatter the spell it may lend
To make me believe when your eyes just deceive
And it's only the tango you love

It's only the tango that you love!

Overall Meaning

In the song "Jealousy" performed by Laine Frankie expresses the singer's inner turmoil and emotional upheaval that he experiences due to his intense feelings of jealousy. The lyrics allude to how the experience of jealousy is akin to torture, something that's eating away at the singer's soul. The very first line of the song, "Jealousy, night and day you torture me," sets the tone for the rest of the song, encapsulating the agony and mental anguish that the singer is going through.

The singer acknowledges that he is under a spell where the music seems to be the cause of his jealousy. Even though he knows that he is the only person who has won her heart, he can't help but feel that he's losing her every time they hear the music. The music creates a spell-like effect that temporarily makes him believe that his lover's eyes are telling him something that she is not saying.

Further, the song explores the intense passion that the singer feels for his lover. They dance a tango, with his heart beating in sync with hers as they sway to the rhythm of the song. The singer knows that the music will end and with it, the spell that's making him feel more secure in their relationship. He fears that he'll be forced to face the cruel reality of her love - that she only loves the tango - and that she'll never say the words he wants to hear.

Overall, "Jealousy" is a song that perfectly captures the pain and torment that jealousy inflicts on a person. The music adds a new layer of depth to the lyrics and conveys the helplessness and vulnerability of the situation. It's a poignant reflection of one of the most unbearable human experiences.

This is obviously a newer recording of the original but it preserves the brilliance of the original and displays what a powerful and commanding voice Frankie kept throughout his life. Exceptional.

@Mikado8848

They used to sing, "Jealousy...oh my god youve got leprosy..." What a retort.

while going through some 78s that my grandpa got at an auction, i found this. I would play it on the phonograph that he had from the thirties, now i listen to it on my record player because it’s a fantastic song with so many tempo changes which makes it more impressive. 10/10
