Jezebel
Laine Frankie Lyrics

Jezebel, Jezebel

If ever the devil was born without a pair of horns
It was you, Jezebel, it was you
If ever an angel fell, Jezebel, it was you
Jezebel, it was you

If ever a pair of eyes promised paradise
Deceiving me, grieving me, leaving me blue
Jezebel, it was you

If ever the devil's plan was made to torment man
It was you, Jezebel, it was you

Could be better had I never known a lover such as you
Forsaking dreams and all for the siren call of your arms

Like a demon, love possessed me, you obsessed me constantly
What evil star is mine, that my fate's design should be Jezebel?

If ever a pair of eyes promised paradise
Deceiving me, grieving me, leaving me blue
Jezebel, it was you

If ever the devil's plan was made to torment man

It was you, Jezebel, it was you, night and day, every way
Jezebel, Jezebel, Jezebel!

Overall Meaning

"Jezebel" by Frankie Laine is a song about a woman who is compared to a biblical character whose name has become synonymous with sinful and wicked behavior. The lyrics describe the woman as the devil's own creation, born without horns, but possessing the power to deceive and torment men. The song speaks of a lover who promised paradise through her eyes, only to leave the singer grieving and feeling blue. The seductive nature of the woman is portrayed as a demonic possession that constantly obsesses and torments the singer.

The lyrics of "Jezebel" are a criticism of a particular type of woman who uses her beauty and charm to manipulate and control men. The song portrays the singer as a victim of this woman's charms, lamenting the loss of his dreams to her siren call. The biblical allusion to Jezebel, the notorious queen of Israel who was known for her worship of false gods and her sexual immorality, heightens the sense of wickedness and temptation.

The song is a classic example of the torch song genre, which was popular in the 1940s and 1950s. The genre was characterized by slow, melancholy music that expressed feelings of love and loss. "Jezebel" became a hit in 1951, reaching number two on the Billboard pop chart. The song was written by Wayne Shanklin, who also wrote hits for other artists such as Perry Como and Andy Williams.

I'm 75 now, this song sounds just as good is it did from my earliest memories of Frankie Laine's voice bellowing out of our radio. No wonder he was such a super star.

I grew up listening to a lot of Frankie Lane, and he was one of my dad's favorite, and especially this song. I'm 61 now, and my dad's been gone for 10 years, but I like to come on here and listen, and remember how happy he was listening to his records, back in the day. The 1960s, when I was a kid. This guy brought my dad so much pleasure, and up until he passed at 83, he would still sing his, "That's My Desire". This one's for you daddy!!

@aw-g

May he rest in peace thank you for this amazing story I'm just a kid 9 years old I have listened to this song in a video game and I liked it I hope you're okay and well :-D
