But the band members still continued to hold contact, and after a joint rehearsal session in the summer of 2003 - meant to kill boredom - they got back together. The chemistry between the musicians was as good as ever, and once the rust had been shaken off, they set about working on ideas for new tracks.
With Mikael Larsson on bass guitar and Johan Oudhuis on drums, Lake of Tears released their 7th studio album Moons and Mushrooms on April 26th, 2007. The album features an increasingly heavy approach to guitar-work, which is emblematic of the new release. Though still having mainly a gothic metal sound, there are some progressive metal influences through the album as well, regarding the guitar riffs. Unlike Black Brick Road (whose melodies were primarily conceived via keyboard experimentation), Moons and Mushrooms features songs originating from the band's recent sporadic touring. Thus the riffs were the first musical element conceived, resulting in a heavier, darker sound.

Last Purple Sky
Lake of Tears Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I like to take them in with the starlight and the moon on a cold night
Oh, I'd like to see them stay
Like those days when we must walk this world alone
As the purple sky turns grey and the world grows cold
...and the world grows cold
I like to take them on, to take them all, and to make them small
Oh, I'd like to see them stay
Like those days when we must walk this world alone
As the purple sky turns grey and the world grows cold
...and the world grows cold
Like those days when we must walk this world alone
As the purple sky turns grey and the world grows cold
And the world grows like those days
When we must walk this world alone
As the purple sky turns grey and the world grows cold
And the world grows cold
The lyrics of Lake of Tears's song "Last Purple Sky" are heavy with the theme of change. The singer expresses a love for observing the passage of time, watching things grow and go, but also laments the inevitability of loss and the passing of the good times. The lines "Like those days when we must walk this world alone / As the purple sky turns grey and the world grows cold / ...and the world grows cold" serve as a reminder of the loneliness that comes with change, of how fleeting moments of joy are often followed by great loss.
The repeated line "I'd like to see them stay" suggests a desire to hold onto what is passing, to slow down time and make the happiness last. However, this desire ultimately seems impossible, given the nature of the world and the constant march of time. The singer's appreciation for beauty is tempered by a sense of resignation and melancholy, underscoring the bittersweet quality of life.
Overall, "Last Purple Sky" speaks to the universal struggle to come to terms with the impermanence of all things. It acknowledges the deep human desire to hold onto what is good, but also recognizes that this desire must coexist with acceptance of the inevitable loss that comes with the passing of time.
