But the band members still continued to hold contact, and after a joint rehearsal session in the summer of 2003 - meant to kill boredom - they got back together. The chemistry between the musicians was as good as ever, and once the rust had been shaken off, they set about working on ideas for new tracks.
With Mikael Larsson on bass guitar and Johan Oudhuis on drums, Lake of Tears released their 7th studio album Moons and Mushrooms on April 26th, 2007. The album features an increasingly heavy approach to guitar-work, which is emblematic of the new release. Though still having mainly a gothic metal sound, there are some progressive metal influences through the album as well, regarding the guitar riffs. Unlike Black Brick Road (whose melodies were primarily conceived via keyboard experimentation), Moons and Mushrooms features songs originating from the band's recent sporadic touring. Thus the riffs were the first musical element conceived, resulting in a heavier, darker sound.

Lake of Tears Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Past the sun hides the one with fires anew
Soon to be gone, morning comes more for me lately
Comes the morning with scarlet and black for you to
Oh, do they come there anew
Comes the morning with sorrow
Nathalie comes the ones of tomorrow
With the fireflies there
Comes within, comes without, what's the scarlet about
And the one from the sun for his fires and few
Soon comes the sun, soon comes the morning here baby
Comes the morning with scarlet and black there for you
Oh, do they come there anew
Comes the morning with sorrow
Smile with a heart full of tears
Nathalie comes the ones of tomorrow
With the fireflies there
Ends the night for the pauper
Like a life full of years
Nathalie tell me then shall we bother
With the fireflies there
The Lake of Tears song, 'Nathalie and the Fireflies', is a hauntingly melancholic and introspective piece featuring evocative lyrics and a brooding melody. The song seems to explore themes of loss, regret, and the passage of time. The lyrics suggest a message of acceptance of fate and time, and the inevitable finality of life.
The opening lines suggest a duality of experiences, perhaps between two individuals, where one sees the morning with scarlet and black, while for the other, it brings more sadness. The next lines seem to hint at the natural cycle of life, where the sun hides away and arises fresh and anew, but at times, the morning brings more sorrow for some individuals. As the lyrics progress, there are ongoing references to the morning arriving with scarlet and black, suggesting an ending or a finality. The chorus indicates the arrival of Nathalie, perhaps a symbol of the future or the hope of new beginnings. The 'fireflies' represent a fleeting beauty or light, which might be cherished in the moments or discarded as they are, with thoughts of whether to hold onto the past or let it go.
Overall, the song seems to suggest a contemplation of mortality and the inevitability of change. It is an introspective and thought-provoking piece that can mean different things to people.
