Raistlin and the Rose
Lake of Tears Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Shadows and fever
No-one hears him cry so he turns to evil
Only now, only now does he know
Pains
Always those pains
Only now, only now does he know
Silver doom, unseen moon will show
As they dance under the moon
They bring doom
He calls her friend
And says he'll change
She calls him friend
And he deceives again
Flowers
A scent of flowers
Always on his mind so he deceives her
Only now, only now does she know
Love
Love makes her blind
Soon she follows him through the doors of time
Only now, only now does she know
Silver doom, unseen moon will show
As they dance under the moon
They bring doom
He calls her friend
And says he'll change
She calls him friend
And he deceives again
The song "Raistlin and the Rose" by Lake of Tears tells a poignant story of a man's descent into darkness and the consequences it has on those around him. The song opens with the imagery of shadows and fever, highlighting the man's inner turmoil and the fact that he feels alone in his pain. The lyric "No-one hears him cry so he turns to evil" suggests that he feels he has no other choice but to turn to negative behavior in order to cope with his pain and isolation.
As the song progresses, we learn that the man's negative behavior includes deceiving a woman who loves him. He is portrayed as being somewhat selfish in his actions, using the woman's affection for him to trick her into following him into a dangerous and doomed situation. The line "Love makes her blind, soon she follows him through the doors of time" implies that the woman doesn't fully understand the depth of his darkness until it's too late.
The song ultimately paints a picture of tragedy, as the man's actions lead to the destruction of both himself and the woman. The repeated line "Silver doom, unseen moon will show" suggests that there was a sense of inevitability about the events that unfolded. The chorus, with its haunting melody and the repeated phrase "as they dance under the moon, they bring doom," effectively captures the sense of tragedy and loss that permeates the song.

Those who say Raistlin was "forced" onto his path have completely missed the point behind the character. There's a reason that Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman wrote that crucial scene in War of the Twins. When Caramon offers an olive branch to Raistlin, basically saying, "Part of you did this to save me", Raistlin replies, "You never did understand me, Caramon." Everything Raistlin does, he does because it's his own choice. Cruelty, kindness, good, evil, love, hate -- it's all Raistlin.

Raistlin would be a different character entirely if he wasn’t, bullied as a child/his mother died...
