But the band members still continued to hold contact, and after a joint rehearsal session in the summer of 2003 - meant to kill boredom - they got back together. The chemistry between the musicians was as good as ever, and once the rust had been shaken off, they set about working on ideas for new tracks.
With Mikael Larsson on bass guitar and Johan Oudhuis on drums, Lake of Tears released their 7th studio album Moons and Mushrooms on April 26th, 2007. The album features an increasingly heavy approach to guitar-work, which is emblematic of the new release. Though still having mainly a gothic metal sound, there are some progressive metal influences through the album as well, regarding the guitar riffs. Unlike Black Brick Road (whose melodies were primarily conceived via keyboard experimentation), Moons and Mushrooms features songs originating from the band's recent sporadic touring. Thus the riffs were the first musical element conceived, resulting in a heavier, darker sound.

Sweetwater
Lake of Tears Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Take me where the winds of spring blow
As swaying as tide, bitter and sweet combined
I close my eyes ...
Nothing to fear, there is no evil near
Only you and me
And water sweet, shallow but oh so deep
Take me where the sweet water flows
Take me where the winds of spring blow
Different somehow, see so much clearer now
I open my eyes ...
Wandering dim, deep down into the dream
Of obscurity
With water deep, bitter but oh so sweet
So very sweet
Take me where the sweet water flows
Take me where the winds of spring blow
The lyrics to Lake of Tears’ song Sweetwater are melancholic and poetic, and touch on the themes of hope and the desire to escape from the mundane. The first half of the song repeats the lines “Take me where the sweet water flows” and “Take me where the winds of spring blow”, creating an image of a longing to be taken away to a place that is peaceful and serene. The singer is seeking escape and solace from the chaos of the world around them, and is requesting to be taken to a place that is revitalizing and full of life.
In the second half of the song, the singer expands on their longing and seems to have found this sense of solace that they were seeking. They describe the waters as “shallow but oh so deep, so very deep”, and how they felt “different somehow, see so much clearer now”. The bitterness and sweetness of the water are both present, creating a sense of balance and harmony that the singer finds comfort in. The song speaks to the human need to find a peaceful refuge from the world, and the longing for a simpler, more fulfilling life.
