In 1999 Jazz legend Joe Sample collaborated with Lalah on the album The Song Lives On, which became a staple on both Jazz and Smooth R&B radio, as well as topping the Jazz charts. However, it would not be until 2004 that Lalah Hathaway would resurface with her own project. She had her biggest hit single in years with an inspired cover of the late Luther Vandross' Forever, For Always, For Love, topping the Urban AC Chart and reaching Top 40 on Billboards mainstream R&B chart, a feat repeated by Outrun the Sky, Hathaway's first solo album in a decade, which was released late in the year.

Won't go astray
won't be afraid
Won't catch me running
You're ruling the way that I move
And I breathe your air
And I breathe your air
You only can rescue me
This is my prayer
If you were mine
If you were mine
I wouldn't want to go to heaven
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
You're ruling the way that I move
Only you can rescue me
This is my prayer
If you were mine
If you were mine
I wouldn't want to go to heaven
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
I cherish the day, oh
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
I cherish the day
I won't go astray
I won't be afraid
You won't catch me running
The lyrics of Lalah Hathaway's song "Cherish The Day" are a beautiful expression of the intense emotions of love and adoration for someone special. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer expresses her unwavering commitment to stay by her lover's side and never stray. She declares that she will not be afraid, nor will she be caught running away from the love that they share. The lyrics are deeply introspective and reveal the extent to which the person she is singing to has come to influence her life. She is moved and controlled by her lover's every action, and she breathes the same air that they do. Her connection to this person is so strong that she believes only they can rescue her, and she confesses that if they were hers, she would not want to go to heaven.
The chorus of the song repeats that the singer cherishes the day she spent with her lover, and she pledges never to be afraid or run away. The repetition of the chorus with slight changes at the ends of each repetition emphasizes the timelessness of her love and commitment to her partner. Overall, the lyrics of "Cherish The Day" are a powerful testimony to the boundless nature of love and how it holds the power to unite people in a deep and abiding way.
