Ride
Lana Del Ray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mm-mm-mm-mm, mm-mm-mm,
Mm-mm-mm-mm, mm-mm-mm.

I've been out on that open road,
You can be my full time daddy,
White and gold.

Singing blues has been gettin' old,
You can be my full time baby,
Hot or cold.

Don't break me down,
(Don't break me down),
I been travelling too long,
(I been travelling too long),
I've been tryin' too hard,
(I've been tryin' too hard),
With one pretty song,
(With one pretty song, oh).

I hear the birds on the summer breeze,
I drive fast, I am alone at midnight.
Been tryin' hard not to get into trouble,
But I, I've got a war in my mind.

So, I just ride, just ride,
I just ride, I just ride.

Dyin' young and playing hard,
That's they way my father made his,
Life and art.

Drink all day and we talk till dark,
That's the way the road dogs do it,
Light 'til dark.

Don't leave me now,
(Don't leave me now),
Don't say goodbye,
(Don't say goodbye),
Don't turn around,
(Don't turn around),
Leave me high and dry.

I hear the birds on the summer breeze,
I drive fast, I am alone at midnight.
Been tryin' hard not to get into trouble,
But I, I've got a war in my mind.

I just ride, just ride,
I just ride, I just ride.

I'm tired of feeling,
Like I'm fuckin' crazy!
I'm tired of drivin',
Till I see stars in my eyes!
All I've got to keep
Myself sane, baby,
So I just drive, I just ride!

Hear the birds on the summer breeze,
I drive fast, I am alone at midnight.
Been tryin' hard not to get into trouble,
But I, I've got a war in my mind.

I just ride, just ride,
I just ride, I just ride.

Overall Meaning

Lana Del Rey’s song “Ride” showcases the singer’s unmistakable sultry voice, a combination of country and pop-rock elements, and gritty lyrics that speak to the restless soul. In this song, she talks about her desire for a love that is both hot and cold, and the fact that she’s been feeling like she’s trying too hard with just one pretty song. She sings about dying young, drinking all day, and talking till dark, and how this is the way the road dogs do it. The song also touches on the struggle to keep oneself sane as a result of the war in her mind.

The lyrics are full of imagery that depict the open road and the solitude that comes along with it. For instance, the “birds on the summer breeze” is a metaphor for the freedom that comes with being on the road. The lines “been tryin' hard not to get into trouble” and “I, I've got a war in my mind” shows the internal battle she’s struggling against. However, despite it all, she just wants to ride and find solace in her journey.

One takeaway from the song is that the struggle for balance in life is never-ending. Lana Del Rey seems to be searching for a sense of belonging throughout the song, trying to find equilibrium between the hot and cold, the dark and light, sanity and the war in her mind.

Not to be dramatic or anything but this song changed my life

@MsPeachster

same. I got the "been tryin' hard not to get into trouble but I-, I got a war on my mind" tattooed on my rib. Honestly when I lost the love of my life, I just wanted quick love. It wasn't healthy but it felt good to just be wanted by someone. The healthy relationships I was in were not "him" or like "him" and I wasn't happy. This song just speaks to me and my early 20's. I traveled, camped in the desert, put myself in stupid situations. To me, this song is a reminder of a time that I was able to grow out of. All the lessons I learned. Sometimes when i'm feeling hurt even an episode of extreme manic feelings, I listen to this. I get my cry session over and live my best life.

@DeleoState

Same!

@Lucy-dy4if

No, you aren't dramatic.😂❤
