The Grants
Lana Del Rey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One, two, ready
I'm gonna take mine with you with me
Ah, "Mine," say it again
"Mine of you with me," thank you
One more time

One, two, ready
I'm gonna take mine of you with me
I'm gonna take mine of you with me
I'm gonna take mine of you with me
Like Rocky Mountain High
The way John Denver sings

So you say there's a chance for us
Should I do a dance for once?
You're a family man, but, but

Do you think about Heaven? Oh
Do you think about me?
My pastor told me
"When you leave, all you take
Oh, is your memory"

And I'm gonna take mine of you with me
I'm gonna take mine of you with me

So many mountains too high to climb
So many rivers, so long, but I'm
Doin' the hard stuff, I'm doin' my time
I'm doin' it for us, for our family line

Do you think about heaven? Oh
Do you think about me?
My pastor told me (I'll do it, I'll do it)
"When you leave, all you take (I did it, I did it)
Oh, is your memories"

And I wanna take mine of you with me
I'm gonna take mine of you with me
Yeah, I'm gonna take mine of you with me
Like Rocky Mountain High
The way John Denver sings

My sister's first-born child
I'm gonna take that too with me
My grandmother's last smile
I'm gonna take that too with me

It's a beautiful life
Remember that too, for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "The Grants" by Lana Del Rey convey feelings of longing for a loved one who may not be able to stay in the singer's life forever. The repeating refrain of "I'm gonna take mine of you with me" suggests that although the relationship may not last, the memories and moments shared are precious and will always be a part of the singer. The nod to John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" adds to the theme of treasuring memories and the beauty of the natural world.

The lyric "So many mountains too high to climb, so many rivers so long, but I'm doin' the hard stuff, I'm doin' my time" suggests that the singer is willing to go through obstacles in order to preserve the relationship and its memories. The mention of family and ancestors, such as the sister's first-born child and the grandmother's last smile, further emphasize the importance of familial bonds and heritage.

Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the transience of life and relationships, and the lasting impact memories can have on individuals.

@Carribeanblue003

I've been following Lana since 2012, I know all her albums, I've always heard her 24 hours a day, in the car, at home, in the office, at night alone, with friends, in the gym, everywhere. I always brought Lana with me.

However, this album is so deep, strong, that I can't hear one song after another. I get stuck at The Grants and it makes me cry endlessly.

It brings out memories of my childhood in me. I felt so lonely and sad when I was a child.

I was with my mother and my sister.

My father left home when I was 3 years old and my sister 3 months old.

My paternal grandmother loved us so much and was always sad about how my father behaved.

In 2017 my grandmother died. My father was not close to me.

My sister will become a mother for the first time, I will be close to her. My father won't be there this time either.

It doesn’t matter

This is worth more to me than anything else.

It's a sign of revenge for me, for us.

It shows how flowers can bloom in the desert, how the absence of a father, can make you so fragile but strong at the same time.

Maybe one day Lana will have all the success she deserves or, maybe, like precious and rare things, she will always be appreciated by those with a big heart and a certain kind of lived behind her. It's okay, it doesn't matter.

I am grateful to Lana for helping me, cared for, healed, rocked with her poetry over the years. There are no words to describe the power of his words, her voice. Just thanks thanks to her.

She also pays tribute to her uncle, David Grant who died in 2016 while climbing the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. He taught Lana how to play the guitar.

It took me just a couple minutes to figure out that she is also Grant.
