"If you're not drinking then you're not playing"
But you've got the music, you've got the music in you, don't you?
Down on the West Coast I get this feeling like
It all could happen that's why I'm leaving you for the music
You for the music it's true, it's true
I'm feeling like there's no one else that brings me higher than higher
Te deseo, cariño, boy it's you I desire
Your love, your love, your love
I can see my baby swinging
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, ooh baby, I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swaying
He's crazy y Cubano como yo, la la
On the balcony and I'm sayin
Move baby, move baby, I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love (I'm in love, I'm in love)
Down on the West Coast, they got their icons
Their silver starlets, their queens of Saigons
But you've got the music, you've got the music in you
Don't you
You pull me close, I push away, I'm feeling hot to the touch
You say you miss me and I wanna say I miss you so much
But something keeps me really quiet, I'm alive, I'm a lush
Hold me close and you say, hush baby, hush
I can see my baby swinging
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, ooh baby. I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swaying
He's crazy y Cubano como yo, la la
On the balcony and I'm saying
Move baby, move baby, I'm in love
I can see my baby swinging
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, ooh baby, I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swaying
He's crazy y Cubano como yo, la la
On the balcony and I'm saying
Move baby, move baby, I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love
The song “West Coast” by Lana Del Rey is an expression of love towards music and the West Coast. It talks about the West Coast’s culture, the kind of music, and the energy and feeling that one experiences while out in the area. She starts by saying that they have a saying on the West Coast, “if you’re not drinking, then you’re not playing.” This indicates the level of party and fun one expects in the West Coast. However, she adds that if you have music, you can still have fun even if you’re not drinking. She then expresses her love for music and her need to leave her partner for it.
The chorus talks about her partner and the passion they share, and how they are both in love. She continues to describe how their love brings out the best in them, with her being the push while he pulls back. Lana expresses her love once more and how she never wants to let her partner go even though they have their differences.
Overall, “West Coast” is an ode to music and the West Coast. It expresses the experience of feeling, passion, and love that one enjoys while in the area. It describes the feeling of freedom that one experiences and how music makes you feel alive.
